The highest reported figure for a Kate Middleton look is a $421,449 estimate for her custom Alexander McQueen wedding gown, according to Vanity Fair. That is not an official valuation or confirmed purchase price. Other published figures cover a single year’s complete outfit or individual dresses, so they are not directly comparable.
Why there is no definitive price ranking
The Princess of Wales and the Royal Household have not published an official wardrobe price list in the sources cited here. Fashion publications have instead reported selected prices and estimates in year-specific roundups and galleries. “Most expensive” can mean a custom gown, a complete outfit with accessories, or one garment; those are different comparisons.
The figures below retain their original dollar currency as reported by the publications. They are historical reports, not current retail prices, and do not add up to a complete wardrobe tally.
The largest reported estimate: the wedding gown

The priciest reported outfit in Vogue Italia’s 2017 roundup
Chanel ensemble
In a 2018 article about Kate’s 2017 looks, Vogue Italia identified a Chanel ensemble as her most expensive outfit of that year, reporting a total of $9,321. The publication listed a $5,216 bag and an $832 belt among its components. These are the article’s reported figures; the outfit total and individual accessories should not be confused with the price of a single garment.
Reported Jenny Packham dress prices
Vogue Italia’s 2018 account also gave prices for two Jenny Packham evening dresses: $4,800 for a crystal-covered blue dress and $5,770 for an embroidered dress. These are historical outlet-reported figures, not confirmation of current prices or amounts paid.

ELLE’s 2016 roundup highlighted pricier pieces by Alexander McQueen, Jenny Packham, and Catherine Walker. It is a selection from that year, not an all-time ranking. British Vogue has also identified Erdem, Alexander McQueen, Emilia Wickstead, and Jenny Packham among designers Kate wears for official engagements; that designer context does not establish prices.

- Check the scope: a custom wedding gown, one dress, and a complete outfit are not equivalent.
