A Kalgoorlie woman won $27,000 in TimesPool after playing for more than 30 years, according to a PerthNow report published on 8 May 2022. She said the unexpected call first made her wonder whether the news was a hoax. Her account is a personal story of a long-running habit and an unlikely win—not evidence that playing for longer makes a prize more likely.
How the Kalgoorlie winner entered TimesPool
PerthNow’s 8 May 2022 report by Bethany Hiatt described the winner as a mother of two adult children and one teenager still at home. The woman said her Sunday routine was to buy The Sunday Times, remove its TimesPool coupon and take the paper to her mother’s home. She said she mailed the coupon on Mondays.
For the winning entry, she had multiple entries and was in a hurry. Instead of her usual method of choosing family initials, she said she picked letters at random that she thought might not have been chosen before. That was her impression, not a demonstrated strategy for improving the odds. The report does not state how many entries she submitted or provide the game’s odds.
What the win meant to her
“I thought it was a hoax,” she told PerthNow, describing her initial reaction to the call. She said she had never won before and enjoyed the low cost of playing and the remote hope of a prize.

She was undecided about what to do with the $27,000. She ruled out replacing her reliable car and said she did not plan a holiday because she visited her elderly mother daily. She thought she might do something special for her daughter’s upcoming birthday. PerthNow also reported that her partner was receiving a disability pension because of his back.
She said, “I’ve always put it in,” and reflected: “It just goes to show if you keep doing it, and keep trying, the prize will come up some day.” Those remarks capture her personal response to the win. They do not establish that continued play increases anyone’s chance of winning.
