Check your airline and official aviation advisories for your travel date; past disruptions do not tell you whether a particular flight is operating today.
What happened to Bali flights during past eruptions?
November 2024: AirAsia schedule changes
AirAsia said ash clouds from eruptions were expected to affect regional airspace and that multiple AirAsia affiliates canceled or rescheduled flights to and from Bali, Lombok and Labuan Bajo. Its related advisory identified routes including Bali–Labuan Bajo, Jakarta–Labuan Bajo and Kuala Lumpur–Labuan Bajo. These were airline-specific notices about that episode, not evidence of current disruption. AirAsia’s November 2024 notice and related route advisory describe the affected services.
June 2025: cancellations despite normal airport operations
The Associated Press reported that by the afternoon during the June 2025 eruption, at least 24 international flights connecting Bali with Australia, Singapore and South Korea had been canceled, with additional delays. It also reported cancellations on four domestic routes. Bali airport spokesperson Ahmad Syaugi Shahab said Ngurah Rai Airport was operating normally and monitoring showed ash had not affected Bali airspace at that time. The report therefore illustrates an important distinction: flight cancellations do not necessarily mean Bali’s airport is closed or that ash is over Bali. Read the Associated Press report.
Is Bali airport closed?
The historical June 2025 report said Ngurah Rai Airport was operating normally while some flights were canceled or delayed. That does not establish the airport’s status now. Airport operations and individual flight schedules are separate questions: an airline may cancel a particular service because of route conditions, aircraft or crew positioning, or operational decisions even when the airport remains open. Confirm the status of your own flight rather than relying on a general headline or airport status alone.

How to check whether your flight is affected
- Check your airline’s flight-status page or app. Search using your flight number and travel date. Review any disruption, rebooking or refund notice sent directly by the airline.
- Check official aviation and volcano advisories. Look for notices applicable to your route and travel time, and follow instructions from Indonesian authorities. A government aviation notice published September 1, 2026 describes safety recommendations for the February 26, 2025 eruption; its stated 5 km recommended restricted radius and sectoral area extending 6 km are historical, not a current perimeter. Read the Directorate General of Civil Aviation notice.
- Recheck close to departure. Conditions and airline schedules can change. Verify again before leaving for the airport and follow any direct airline instructions about check-in, rerouting or replacement flights.
- Keep records if plans change. Save cancellation messages, booking confirmations and receipts for costs you may need to discuss with the airline or insurer.
What cancellations can mean for your travel costs
Start with the airline’s terms and the notice for your specific booking to find out what rebooking, refund or other assistance is available. Those terms are distinct from travel-insurance benefits. An insurer advisory says eligible non-refundable expenses may be claimable in some circumstances, subject to the policy’s terms and limits; this is not a guarantee that a particular volcanic disruption is covered. Review the insurer’s volcano and travel-insurance guidance, then check your own policy for coverage triggers, exclusions, timing requirements and documentation rules before assuming a prepaid expense will be reimbursed.
