The juvenile Ceratosaurus nasicornis skeleton is no longer headed to auction. Sotheby’s sold it on July 16, 2025, during its Geek Week sale. Against a pre-sale estimate of $4 million to $6 million, the result was $30,510,000 on Sotheby’s result page, which the auction house’s post-sale press release rounds to $30.5 million. The headline’s “to hit auction block” wording describes the pre-sale stage, and its “world’s only complete baby dinosaur” claim goes further than the evidence supports. The defensible version is narrower: this was the only known juvenile Ceratosaurus specimen, and it was a mounted composite rather than an entirely original skeleton.

When you cite this sale, use $30,510,000 if you need the precise figure and $30.5 million if you are summarizing. The sources cited here do not break down how the result relates to fees charged to the buyer, so treat each figure as the amount Sotheby’s published rather than a net payment to the seller.
How far the “complete” and “only” claims reach
“Complete” means assembled, not entirely original
Sotheby’s describes the mount as 139 original fossil bone elements supplemented with sculpted material. The skull is described as virtually complete and contains 57 fossil bone elements. A reader should therefore understand the specimen as a mounted composite in which most, but not all, visible parts are original bone. The lot description does not claim the skeleton is fully articulated without qualification, and this article does not claim it either.

“Only” is limited to juvenile Ceratosaurus
The supported superlative is that this was the only known juvenile Ceratosaurus specimen, a point made in the source that originally framed the story. Sotheby’s makes a separate claim: its press release calls the fossil the youngest skeleton sold at private auction ever. That is the auction house’s own characterization and should be attributed to it. Neither statement establishes that this is the only complete baby dinosaur of any species. The press release also notes that the sale was not a record for dinosaur bones, pointing to a stegosaurus Sotheby’s sold in 2024 as the holder of that title.
“The fossil sold for $30.5 million during July’s Geek Week sale, not a record for dinosaur bones (the stegosaurus we sold in 2024 still holds that title), but still the youngest skeleton to be sold at private auction ever.”

Where the skeleton is now
Sotheby’s said the buyer intended to loan the specimen to an institution. The public material cited here does not identify the buyer, and it does not confirm that a loan has begun or name a current display location. Treat the loan as a stated plan, not a verified fact about where the skeleton is today.

- Check the date. This sale closed on July 16, 2025, so any article describing it as upcoming is out of date.
- Separate the estimate from the result. A pre-sale range is a forecast by the auction house, and the final price can land far above it, as this one did.
- Match the figure to its source. An exact result-page number and a rounded press-release number can both be correct; they should not be mixed in one comparison.
- Read “complete” and “only” against the lot description. Scope words in a headline usually narrow once you check the seller’s wording.
For the original framing of the story, see the Interesting Engineering article, which used the question-style heading “Have a few million to spare to buy a dinosaur?”
