Who is the crypto entrepreneur who bid $28 million?
The bidder was Justin Sun, founder of the cryptocurrency platform TRON. In 2021, Blue Origin auctioned the first seat on its New Shepard spacecraft. The auction ended with Sun’s $28 million winning bid, which Blue Origin said would benefit its foundation, Club for the Future. Blue Origin announced the auction result on June 12, 2021.
The amount was the winning bid for that specific first seat, not a published standard fare for New Shepard passengers. Sun identified himself as the winner in December 2021 and said he would choose five people to accompany him.
When did Justin Sun fly, and who joined him?
Sun did not join New Shepard’s first crewed flight in July 2021; contemporaneous reporting attributed the change to scheduling conflicts. He later flew on NS-34 on August 3, 2025. Sun and five fellow passengers made up the six-person crew:

Blue Origin’s NS-34 mission recap lists all six crew members; GeekWire reported additional passenger context.
What kind of spaceflight was NS-34?
New Shepard carried the crew on a brief suborbital flight: the capsule went up above the Kármán line and returned to Earth rather than entering orbit. GeekWire reported that the capsule reached nearly 66 miles (106 kilometers), spent a few minutes in weightlessness, and landed by parachute near Blue Origin’s West Texas launch site. The trip lasted about ten minutes.

Blue Origin described NS-34 as the 34th New Shepard flight and the program’s 14th human spaceflight. The company said 75 people had flown on New Shepard by the time of its August 3, 2025, recap. Those are program totals as of that mission, not current totals.

Blue Origin said the auction proceeds benefited 19 space-focused nonprofits, with each selected organization receiving a $1 million grant. This is the company’s account of how the proceeds were distributed. The company’s recap also quotes New Shepard senior vice president Phil Joyce saying the view of Earth has a “unifying effect” on those who witness it.
