A federal judge allowed the Federal Trade Commission’s antitrust claims against Amazon to move past the initial motion-to-dismiss stage. The decision did not find Amazon liable or decide whether the allegations are true; it was a procedural ruling about which claims could continue.
What the judge decided
On September 30, 2024, U.S. District Judge John H. Chun ruled on Amazon’s motion to dismiss in FTC et al. v. Amazon.com, Inc., civil action 2:23-cv-01495-JHC, in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington. The order left the FTC’s federal antitrust claims in the case, while dismissing some state-law claims. Contemporaneous reporting said the states could amend at least some of the dismissed claims; that does not mean every state claim was dismissed or that all could necessarily be revived. The FTC’s case page identifies the case and lists the order.
What the FTC and its partners allege
The plaintiffs are the FTC, 18 state attorneys general, and Puerto Rico. Their complaint alleges that Amazon used interlocking anticompetitive and unfair strategies to maintain monopoly power in online retail and marketplace services. The agency and its state partners describe a theory involving seller pricing, fulfillment, the shopper experience, and competition from rivals. These are allegations in the complaint—not findings made by Judge Chun.
The ruling means the federal claims were allowed to proceed beyond an early pleading challenge. It does not establish that Amazon has monopoly power, that any alleged conduct occurred as described, or that the conduct violated antitrust law. Those questions require further proceedings and evaluation of evidence.

How a motion to dismiss differs from a final ruling
A motion to dismiss asks a court to assess whether a complaint can proceed at that stage. It is not a trial, and denying dismissal is not a verdict for the plaintiffs. Here, the court’s order let the FTC’s federal claims continue, but did not decide the merits or liability. The distinction matters: a case can survive this early challenge and later be narrowed, settled, or decided in either side’s favor.
Which Amazon case this is—and what is known about its status
This is the FTC’s e-commerce antitrust action, not the separate FTC litigation over Amazon Prime enrollment and cancellation. The two matters have different case numbers and concern different allegations; the FTC case page for this antitrust action identifies it as 2:23-cv-01495.

The FTC case page used here says it was last updated October 31, 2024. It records the September 30, 2024 order, but does not establish the case’s later docket schedule or developments through October 8, 2026. No trial date, later ruling, settlement, or present procedural status is asserted here.
