JPMorgan Chase appointed Mamtha Banerjee to lead its Seattle Tech Center in January 2025, when the engineering and technology hub had grown to approximately 380 employees from its 2018 launch. Her remit covered strategy, innovation, talent and community engagement while she continued leading Core Platform Engineering in the bank’s Consumer & Community Banking division. Later expansion reporting shows the Seattle technology workforce reached about 400 people by January 2026, but Banerjee’s current status is disputed by conflicting public reports.
Who is Mamtha Banerjee?
Banerjee combines computer-science training with technology leadership, entrepreneurship and Seattle startup experience. Before taking on the Seattle Tech Center assignment, she had worked at JPMorgan Chase for more than two years. Her earlier ventures included InvestmentYogi, which she founded and led from 2008 to 2012, and Magicflix, which she founded and led from 2013 to 2015. Later coverage also identified prior work at Expedia.
That background matters because the appointment was broader than a conventional office-management role. Banerjee brought experience building products and companies as well as running large-scale engineering organizations. The original appointment was reported by GeekWire on January 24, 2025.
What responsibilities did the appointment include?
Banerjee was appointed to oversee the Seattle Tech Center’s:

She also remained head of Core Platform Engineering within Consumer & Community Banking and joined JPMorgan Chase’s Global Technology Center Leadership team. In practice, that connected Seattle’s local priorities with the bank’s wider technology organization.
What is JPMorgan Chase’s Seattle Tech Center?
JPMorgan Chase created the center in 2018 to tap Seattle’s deep pool of engineers and technology professionals. It is an engineering and technology operation, not a retail branch or a purely administrative office.
At the time of Banerjee’s appointment, the center’s work included:
Rank #2

- Discreet Appearance – Tap is easily installed and creates a completely seamless look over your outlets whether used over an existing wallplate or receptacle
- Cybersecurity and cloud security
- Cloud technologies
- Artificial intelligence and machine learning
- Platform engineering
Cloud security was a continuing priority, while platform engineering was expanding. The reporting does not establish a separate Seattle-owned AI division or identify a specific AI product built by the center. AI was one of several technical areas in a much larger global engineering system.
What does “380 people” mean?
The approximately 380 figure was a headcount snapshot in the January 2025 report. It should not be read as JPMorgan Chase’s total Seattle workforce or as a count of 380 software engineers. The source described a broader technology center, and it did not provide a detailed occupational breakdown.
A January 2026 update put JPMorgan Chase’s Seattle technology workforce at approximately 400 people. That suggests continued, modest growth, but “Tech Center employees” and “tech workers” may not be identical categories, so the two figures are not a perfectly controlled year-over-year comparison.

Why does a major bank need an engineering hub in Seattle?
Seattle offers a large concentration of engineers, cloud specialists, security professionals and platform technologists. JPMorgan Chase can recruit people whose experience was shaped by major technology companies and startups, including during periods when those employers were reducing staff or reorganizing.
The work also presents a different engineering problem from many consumer internet products. Banerjee described the scale of JPMorgan Chase’s systems and its resiliency requirements as a distinctive challenge. Financial infrastructure must operate securely and reliably under regulatory, risk-management and continuity demands. That can appeal to engineers who want to work on high-consequence systems, although compliance requirements and legacy platforms can constrain experimentation and make the work less visible to consumers than a mainstream technology product.
The trade-off is especially relevant to recruiting. Seattle provides access to specialized talent, while return-to-office requirements can affect how easily an employer attracts and retains that talent. The January 2025 report discussed JPMorgan Chase’s plan to have employees return to the office five days a week, but Seattle officials were still awaiting details about how the policy would apply to particular locations. Those remarks are dated to 2025 and should not be assumed to describe the policy’s implementation in 2026.

How did the leadership transition happen?
Rao Lakkakula previously led the Seattle technology hub and moved to Microsoft in October 2024. His departure created the opening for Banerjee’s expanded assignment. Kristine Baker, the Seattle Technology Center manager, continued working with Banerjee and had also supported Lakkakula, providing continuity in local operations.
Banerjee’s role therefore combined local center leadership with enterprise responsibilities. It was an expanded role for an existing JPMorgan Chase executive, rather than an announcement that the bank had opened a new Seattle operation.

Banerjee said she wanted to see more products emerge from the Seattle Tech Center, particularly in AI, cloud and platform engineering. Those comments describe priorities and aspirations, not a published list of Seattle-exclusive products.

- SURGE PROTECTOR WALL TAP WITH USB — Expands one grounded duplex outlet into five grounded, three prong outlets plus one USB C port and one USB A port for powering electronics and charging devices from a single location
- USB C AND USB A CHARGING — One USB C and one USB A port provide 17W of shared charging power for phones, tablets, earbuds and other USB powered devices
- SIDE ACCESS OUTLET DESIGN — Side facing outlets make it easy to plug in devices behind TVs, furniture, desks and entertainment centers
- 560 JOULES OF SURGE PROTECTION — Helps protect connected electronics from power surges, voltage spikes and everyday electrical disturbances
- AUTOMATIC SHUTDOWN SAFETY — Discontinues power if surge protection capacity is exceeded to help protect connected devices
The distinction is important: the center can contribute engineering expertise and components to JPMorgan Chase’s global platforms without owning the bank’s entire AI or cloud strategy. Public reporting supports a role in foundational technology, cybersecurity and platform work, but it does not quantify Seattle’s share of companywide investment or identify a standalone product portfolio.
What happened after the 2025 appointment?
JPMorgan Chase later expanded its downtown Seattle footprint. According to January 2026 GeekWire reporting, the bank added approximately 40,000 square feet at 1301 Second Ave., bringing its occupied space there to about 128,000 square feet. The Seattle Tech Center was being relocated from 1201 Third Ave., and the 42-story building formerly known as the Russell Investments Center was renamed the JPMorganChase Center.
The same report described approximately 850 total JPMorgan Chase employees in Seattle, including about 400 technology workers. The real-estate expansion and workforce figures indicate continued local investment, but the building renaming does not prove that every Seattle employee moved into the tower.
Is Mamtha Banerjee still leading the Seattle technology operation?
Her appointment is established as a January 2025 event; her later status is not settled by the available public information. A March 2026 Puget Sound Business Journal report said Banerjee had departed JPMorgan Chase’s Seattle technology leadership role. However, her public LinkedIn profile and a Chase LinkedIn post indexed later continued to describe her as a Seattle technology-center leader.

What the Seattle story signals
JPMorgan Chase’s Seattle presence is part of a technology strategy that began in 2018, not a one-year hiring initiative. The move from approximately 380 center employees in early 2025 to a later report of about 400 technology workers, alongside a larger downtown footprint, points to continued demand for specialized engineering talent. It also illustrates the balance the bank must manage between local autonomy and a global technology organization, between AI ambition and documented product evidence, and between Seattle’s talent advantages and office-policy constraints.
