A July 31, 2024 report said Apple’s concerns contributed to stalled talks for Tata Group to buy a 51% controlling stake in Vivo’s Indian operations. The reported conflict was that Tata was becoming an Apple manufacturing partner while potentially taking control of a major Apple smartphone rival. No public evidence establishes that Apple had a formal veto or legally blocked the transaction.
What deal was reportedly disrupted?
The proposed transaction involved Tata Group acquiring 51% of Vivo’s Indian business—not Vivo globally or its Chinese parent. The Times of India reported that Vivo was discussing a controlling Indian partner as part of its effort to “Indianise” operations. The proposed stake, buyer and target were reported by multiple outlets, but no purchase price or signed definitive agreement was disclosed.
The original report appeared on July 31, 2024, with follow-up coverage on August 1–2. The Times of India described the talks as stalled, while The Economic Times summarized the reported Apple roadblock.
Why Vivo wanted an Indian partner
Reports framed the proposal as a response to political and regulatory pressure on Chinese smartphone companies to increase Indian participation in their local operations. “Indianise” is the language used in the reporting; the available coverage does not establish that Indian law required Vivo to sell exactly 51% or that the government issued such a specific order.

Localization can mean several different things:
- Ownership: adding an Indian controlling shareholder or partner.
- Manufacturing: producing phones or components in India.
- Operations: using Indian management, employees, suppliers and distribution networks.
These objectives overlap but are not interchangeable. A controlling Tata stake would have addressed ownership localization, while Vivo could pursue manufacturing and operational localization without completing that transaction.
Why Apple was reportedly uncomfortable
Tata was becoming an important Apple manufacturing partner in India. Tata entered iPhone assembly after acquiring Wistron’s Indian manufacturing operations in a transaction reported at approximately $125 million. The relevant relationship is primarily a supplier and manufacturing arrangement; Tata does not own Apple.

According to sources cited by The Times of India’s follow-up, Apple was uncomfortable with Tata simultaneously controlling Vivo India, a direct smartphone competitor. A supplier that manufactures Apple devices and also controls a rival handset business could raise questions about capacity priorities, confidential processes, procurement and strategic alignment. Those are reasonable business concerns, but the reports do not prove that information was leaked or that Tata would have violated a contract.
Tata Group is a diversified conglomerate, and “Tata” can refer to several group companies, including Tata Electronics. The available reports do not disclose the contractual restrictions governing Tata’s work for Apple or establish that every Tata entity was barred from serving competitors.

How strong is the evidence?
| Established by the reports | Reported but unattributed | Not established |
|---|---|---|
| Tata and Vivo discussed a majority stake in Vivo’s India business. | Apple objected to or was uncomfortable with the arrangement. | Apple had a formal veto right. |
| The proposed stake was 51%. | Apple’s concerns contributed to talks breaking down. | Apple threatened to withdraw manufacturing work. |
| Vivo sought greater Indian participation. | Reconsideration appeared unlikely “as of now.” | A signed agreement was terminated or that Apple contacted regulators. |
The safest description is that Apple’s reported concerns helped derail or stall negotiations. Calling the episode an Apple “veto,” legal prohibition or forced withdrawal goes beyond the public evidence. The reports rely on unnamed sources, and neither Apple nor Tata publicly announced a completed acquisition in the cited coverage.
What the episode says about India’s electronics strategy
The story brings three pressures into the same transaction:

- Apple’s supply-chain diversification: Apple has been expanding manufacturing in India, making reliable local production partners strategically important.
- India’s industrial policy: New Delhi has encouraged domestic electronics manufacturing and greater local participation, particularly in sectors involving foreign smartphone companies.
- Multi-brand conflict: A large Indian industrial group may be attractive to several handset makers, but serving one brand can make it a sensitive partner for another.
This does not show that Apple controls Tata’s corporate decisions or India’s smartphone market. It illustrates how a conglomerate’s supplier role can affect its freedom to enter a competing handset business.

A stalled ownership deal did not mean Vivo was leaving India. Follow-up reporting said Vivo continued expanding its manufacturing footprint, including a planned facility in Greater Noida that was expected to begin operations by the end of 2024. The Times of India reported those plans.

That distinction matters: the reported setback concerned a proposed change in control, not a shutdown of Vivo’s Indian manufacturing, sales or distribution operations. The cited coverage does not confirm whether Vivo later found another controlling partner.
What remains unknown
- The valuation and other commercial terms of the proposed 51% sale.
- Whether Tata and Vivo signed a definitive agreement.
- Any Apple contract clause giving it approval or veto rights.
- Whether Apple communicated directly with Tata, Vivo or Indian regulators.
- Whether negotiations failed solely because of Apple’s concerns or also involved valuation, governance, financing or regulatory issues.
Earlier reporting in June 2024 had already described discussions between Tata and Vivo and linked them to localization pressure: The Times of India’s earlier account. An Apple-focused summary from 9to5Mac was also derivative of the July 31 reporting.
Bottom line
The headline refers to a reported, not publicly documented, breakdown of Tata’s proposed purchase of 51% of Vivo India. Apple’s concern was reportedly the competitive conflict created by Tata manufacturing Apple devices while controlling a rival smartphone business. The evidence supports “talks stalled” or “Apple’s objections reportedly helped derail the deal”—not that Apple formally blocked it.
