Jonjo Shelvey did not say that he personally earns £2,000 a month at Arabian Falcons. In an interview published by BBC Sport on 16 October 2025, he described about £2,000 a month as the “ballpark” standard wage for a footballer in the UAE Second Division League. His own playing pay was not disclosed. Shelvey retired from professional football in April 2026 and became Arabian Falcons’ manager; the sources do not disclose his managerial pay either.
What did Jonjo Shelvey say about the £2,000 monthly wage?
Speaking to BBC Sport on 16 October 2025, Shelvey said: “The ballpark of the standard wage here is £2,000-a-month for a footballer.” He was describing what he considered a typical wage in the UAE Second Division League, not revealing his personal salary.
The distinction matters: a broad estimate about a league is not evidence of what an individual player’s contract pays. The BBC interview does not state Shelvey’s playing wage, and the club announcements about his later managerial appointment do not disclose his pay in that role.
Did Shelvey move to the UAE for money?
Shelvey said money was not the reason for his move. In the same BBC interview, he said: “My brother earns more working in a hotel in London, so it was never about coming here for the money.” That is his account of his motivation and his comparison, not independently verified information about either person’s earnings.

He joined Arabian Falcons as a player in September 2025, according to Newcastle United. The BBC interview also discussed a UAE league match with an attendance Shelvey estimated at about 75; that was his estimate, not an official attendance figure.
What is Shelvey doing now?
In April 2026, Shelvey retired from professional football and took over as Arabian Falcons manager, according to announcements from Newcastle United and Liverpool FC. The news changes how the old wage claim should be described: it concerned his 2025 move as a player, not a current player salary.

Liverpool reported that Shelvey was 34 and had made 69 appearances and scored seven goals for the club, as well as earning six senior England caps. BBC Sport reported 278 Premier League appearances in its 2025 interview.

The available reports do not establish Shelvey’s personal playing contract or his pay as manager. It is therefore not possible to state a confirmed monthly wage for him at Arabian Falcons from these sources. The £2,000 figure remains his estimate of the league’s standard monthly wage, not a verified salary for Shelvey.

BBC Sport reported in April 2026 that a documentary would follow Arabian Falcons’ attempt to win promotion in the final five games of the season. That report did not name a distributor or confirm where, or whether, it is currently available to watch.
