The sequel ultimately earned about $207.5 million worldwide, against production-budget estimates of $190 million to $200 million. Those figures point to a severe commercial disappointment, but box-office gross alone does not reveal a studio’s final profit or loss.

Variety’s $200 million figure was reported in 2024, citing people familiar with the film’s financials; it is not an audited studio disclosure. The difference between that report and The Numbers’ estimate is a reason to treat any budget-based calculation as approximate, not a definitive accounting. What happened after opening weekend?
The sequel’s second domestic weekend brought in $7,002,654, an 81% decline from its opening weekend. Its cumulative domestic gross after two weekends was $51,559,127, according to The Numbers. Not by itself. The worldwide gross is the amount reported at theaters, not the amount returned to the studio. Theaters retain part of ticket sales, and a gross-to-production-budget comparison leaves out other costs and revenue sources. The published budget figures are estimates, not a complete accounting of what the film cost to make and release.

Variety reported an estimated $450 million break-even point, attributing it to sources familiar with the film’s financials. That is a reported industry estimate—not a confirmed Warner Bros. threshold or an audited calculation. It should not be presented as the exact point at which the movie made or lost money. Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian put the opening in budget context: “The biggest issue of all is the reported budget. A $40 or $50 million opening for a less expensive movie would be a solid debut.” His comment was a contemporary assessment of this film’s opening and reported cost, not a universal box-office rule.
