The Associated Press reported that the film’s second-weekend domestic gross fell 81% to $7.1 million. AP characterized a decline of that scale as having little precedent for a superhero film; that is a narrow comparison, not proof of an all-time box-office record.
What records and rankings are supported?
Rankings need a defined market, time period and category. The available listings support specific chart positions, not a broad claim that Joker 2 set a universal box-office record.

- October domestic daily chart: The Numbers lists the film’s October 4, 2024 gross as $20,257,472 and places it 29th on its October domestic daily chart. See The Numbers’ October domestic daily chart.
- UK opening-weekend table: The Film Distributors’ Association’s 2025 yearbook places the film 12th in its UK 2024 opening-weekend table, with £5,613,664 including previews. This is a UK annual ranking, not a worldwide position. See the FDA 2025 Yearbook.
- Second-weekend decline: AP’s 81% figure describes the reported domestic drop in the film’s second weekend; it should not be recast as an unqualified “worst ever” record.
Do box-office gross and budget show whether the film made money?
No. Gross is ticket revenue, not the amount a studio keeps, and The Numbers’ $190 million production-budget figure is not a confirmed all-in cost. Gross and reported production budget alone do not account for distribution arrangements, theater shares, marketing or other expenses, so they cannot establish the film’s profit or loss.
