Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire opened to an estimated $80 million in North America, far above Boxoffice Pro’s February 29, 2024 long-range forecast of $41 million–$50 million. That forecast was a historical projection, not a current one; contemporaneous opening estimates and final database totals tell the rest of the story.
What did Godzilla x Kong opening weekend projections predict?
On February 29, 2024, Boxoffice Pro projected a domestic opening-weekend range of $41 million–$50 million and a domestic total range of $91 million–$140 million. It described these as best- and worst-case scenarios shaped by conditions and model fluctuation at the time, and cautioned that they were “statistical snapshots, not final forecasts.” Boxoffice Pro’s February 29 forecast was therefore an early range, not a promise of a final result.
What Boxoffice Pro considered
The forecast identified several potential strengths: the pairing of two familiar monster characters, director Adam Wingard’s return after Godzilla vs. Kong, a Good Friday/Easter release frame, premium large-format screenings, and the possibility that a relatively light April slate could help the film hold if word of mouth was healthy.
Its concerns included whether the previous film’s team-up novelty would attract audiences beyond franchise fans, the franchise’s prior domestic trend, and competition from Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and Dune: Part Two. These were factors the publication cited, not isolated causes with measured effects.

How much did Godzilla x Kong make opening weekend?
Boxoffice Pro reported an estimated $80 million domestic opening on 3,861 screens on March 31, 2024—above its own highest forecast of $65 million. The Associated Press also reported an $80 million opening on 3,861 North American screens, noting that projections had been closer to $50 million. These were contemporaneous estimates, not final database totals.
Boxoffice Pro said premium formats—including IMAX, Dolby Cinema, other premium large-format screens, 3D, and motion seating—accounted for 48% of opening business. IMAX alone contributed $8.8 million, or 11% of the nationwide total. It also estimated $114 million from 63 international markets, for a $194 million worldwide opening. Its March 31 weekend report provides the contemporaneous figures.

- Item name: Godzilla Vs. Kong
- Product type: PHYSICAL MOVIE
- Brand: Warner Bros.
Those numbers show a large gap between the early projection and the opening estimate. They do not establish that premium formats, the holiday frame, or any single factor caused the difference. Legendary worldwide production chair Mary Parent described the film as “a cinematic event” and said audiences were seeing “these iconic characters doing things we’ve never seen them do before,” but that is an executive’s explanation, not independent evidence of what drove ticket sales.
Did Godzilla x Kong beat projections?
Yes. The estimated $80 million domestic opening exceeded Boxoffice Pro’s February range by $30 million over its top end and $39 million over its bottom end. Against the range midpoint of $45.5 million, the opening estimate was about 76% higher. That comparison is specific to this forecast and opening estimate; it is not a general measure of Boxoffice Pro’s forecast accuracy.
Rank #3
For the eventual gross, two databases report slightly different totals. Box Office Mojo lists a domestic opening of $80,006,561, domestic gross of $196,350,016, international gross of $375,700,000, and worldwide gross of $572,050,016. Box Office Mojo’s title page reports those figures.
The Numbers lists the same $80,006,561 opening and $375,700,000 international gross, but gives domestic gross as $196,805,338 and worldwide gross as $572,505,338. The domestic and worldwide totals differ from Box Office Mojo’s by $455,322. Because the databases do not match, it is more precise to attribute each total to its source than to present one as an uncontested exact figure. The Numbers’ film page also labels its home-video sales figures as estimates.

Boxoffice Pro’s March 31 report compared the estimated $80 million opening with earlier North American MonsterVerse openings:
| Film | North American opening | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Godzilla (2014) | $93,188,384 | Boxoffice Pro’s reported comparison |
| Kong: Skull Island (2017) | $61,025,472 | Boxoffice Pro’s reported comparison |
| Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) | $47,776,293 | Boxoffice Pro’s reported comparison |
| Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) | $32.2 million | Released day-and-date to Max during COVID; not a like-for-like theatrical comparison |
| Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024) | $80 million estimated | Contemporaneous opening estimate reported March 31, 2024 |
The $80 million estimate was the second-highest opening in this comparison, behind Godzilla (2014). The 2021 release is a particularly imperfect benchmark because it was available day-and-date on Max during the pandemic. More broadly, release timing, audience conditions, and the share of premium-format business differ across films, so this lineup is context rather than a controlled comparison of demand.

What the forecast-versus-result comparison tells you
- The February 29, 2024 projection was substantially below the opening estimate reported a month later, so it should be read as an early range rather than the film’s eventual result.
- The opening estimate and final database totals answer different questions: one captures the weekend estimate as reported at the time, while the databases list later cumulative grosses.
- The film’s strong premium-format share is part of the reported opening picture, but the available figures do not prove which individual release or audience factors produced the overperformance.
- For franchise comparisons, the 2021 day-and-date release and the differences in release conditions matter; opening totals alone do not isolate a film’s underlying audience demand.
