How to get the $40 Costco Shop Card
- Join online. Costco describes this as an online-only promotion. Start from Costco’s U.S. Join page.
- Select Executive membership. The current promotion offers $40 with Executive membership. Gold Star membership has a separate $20 offer.
- Meet the eligibility rules. The offer is for new members and people who have not held a Costco membership in any capacity during the previous 18 months.
- Provide a valid email and set up auto-renewal at signup. Costco requires auto-renewal using a Visa credit or debit card, or a Mastercard debit card, to receive the Digital Shop Card.
Costco’s exact eligibility wording is: “Valid only for new members and those who have not been a Costco member (in any capacity, Primary, Household, or Affiliate) in the last 18 months.”
Which membership comes with the $40 offer?
The $40 incentive is tied to Executive membership, not every new Costco membership. Costco’s current U.S. Join page lists these annual prices and promotional amounts:

The $40 Shop Card by itself does not establish that Executive is the better value: compare its additional $65 annual fee with the benefits you expect to use, including eligible purchases for the 2% reward.

How the Digital Costco Shop Card works
Costco describes a Digital Shop Card as an electronic gift card sent by email. You can redeem it at a Costco location using a smartphone or a printed copy. Costco also says digital cards may be used at Costco.com and Costco.ca. It is a gift card, not cash or an automatic reduction of your membership fee.
When will Costco email the card?
Costco’s FAQ does not promise one fixed delivery date for this promotion. For a qualifying online order, check the order confirmation email for the Shop Card delivery timeframe. Costco describes the digital card as arriving by email.

Keep the separate credit-card offer distinct
Costco’s Join page also lists a separate opportunity for a $65 Digital Costco Shop Card with an application for and approval of the Costco Anywhere Visa Card alongside a new Executive membership. That is a distinct credit-card offer with separate application and approval conditions; it is not part of the $40 Executive membership incentive described above.
