The leadership change also named Udit Madan to lead Worldwide Operations. Amazon did not give a reason for Felton’s appointment.
What changed in Amazon’s leadership
Felton’s move connected two different roles: he had led work in Worldwide Operations and was appointed to oversee finance at AWS. The announcement identified his new title as senior vice president and CFO of AWS, with Olsavsky as his reporting line. It did not identify a predecessor or explain why the appointment was made. Amazon’s announcement is the primary account of the change.
At the same time, Udit Madan was set to take over leadership of Worldwide Operations. Felton’s move to AWS and Madan’s move into Operations were the two linked changes in the announcement.
Who is John Felton?
When Amazon announced the appointment, it said Felton had worked at the company for more than 19 years, including 12 years in Operations. He had held both finance and operating-business roles within that organization.

In a message to employees reproduced by Amazon, Felton described his Operations tenure as six years in finance and six years in the operating business. He wrote, “I’m excited to share many of the skills I learned from you all in Operations with the AWS team.”
How Felton’s Operations career developed
Amazon’s 2022 leadership announcement provides an earlier snapshot of Felton’s responsibilities. It says he moved to Worldwide Operations in 2018 as vice president of Global Customer Fulfillment. In 2019, he took over the newly formed Global Delivery Services group, which covered global import/export, Amazon Logistics, and last-mile delivery services. Amazon’s 2022 announcement describes that organizational context.

By the time of the 2024 appointment, Amazon said Felton and his teams had most recently led work to regionalize the company’s U.S. network. Doug Herrington, CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores, said the work improved delivery speeds and reduced cost to serve. Those are company-reported outcomes, not independent measurements established by the announcement.
Felton also said the Operations group lowered cost to serve for the first time in years while delivering Amazon’s fastest delivery speeds to Prime customers in 2023. That description appeared in his message to employees and should be understood as his statement, rather than an independently verified assessment.
What the announcement does—and does not—say
- It confirms: Felton’s appointment as AWS senior vice president and CFO, his reporting line to Brian Olsavsky, and Madan’s succession in Worldwide Operations.
- It does not explain: the reason for Felton’s appointment or the departure of any predecessor.
GeekWire reported that Richard Puccio was reportedly leaving, based on reporting beyond Amazon’s announcement. That detail is separate from the official appointment notice and is not a reason for Felton’s move. GeekWire’s report provides that additional context.
