Amazon’s January 2026 layoff round listed 2,198 Washington employees for scheduled separation, and more than half of the cuts were reported in the company’s core product and engineering organizations. The count comes from a Washington State Employment Security Department WARN filing, as reported by GeekWire and Axios; it is a planned-separation figure, not a verified total of completed job losses.
What the 2,198 figure counts
GeekWire reported the Washington filing details on February 2, 2026, and Axios also reported 2,198 affected Washington jobs. The state WARN filing recorded employees scheduled for separation in Amazon’s January corporate round. It does not, by itself, establish how many people ultimately left the company.
The scheduled separation window ran from April 28 through late June 2026. Amazon employees who transferred internally before their scheduled separation dates would not ultimately be laid off, according to GeekWire’s account of the filing. The available reporting does not provide a verified final separation total.

How the Washington cuts fit into Amazon’s wider reductions
Amazon said its January 2026 companywide round covered approximately 16,000 roles. That was separate from the 14,000-role reduction the company announced in October 2025. The Washington WARN count is a state-level figure within the January round, not an additional reduction to add to the companywide total.

In its January employee memo, Amazon Senior Vice President of People Experience and Technology Beth Galetti described the company’s stated organizational rationale: “As I shared in October, we’ve been working to strengthen our organization by reducing layers, increasing ownership, and removing bureaucracy.” The memo did not identify AI as the confirmed cause of this Washington round.

Amazon said most U.S.-based affected employees would have 90 days to seek another internal role. For employees who could not find a role or chose not to look, the company said transition support would include severance pay, outplacement services, applicable health-insurance benefits, and more. Those are the company’s stated provisions; the memo does not establish that every employee received identical support or benefits.
