Elon Musk replied, “Umm … no.” Legere then made a separate public offer to take the job; Musk rejected that too, saying Twitter needed a technologist. These were public exchanges, not evidence of a formal CEO search or interview.
What Cramer proposed—and Musk’s reply
On November 13, 2022, Cramer posted on Twitter: “@elonmusk, please consider @JohnLegere as ceo so you can figure out what to do with it as he deals with client-facing issues.” Cramer’s suggestion was that Legere handle the public-facing side while Musk decided what to do with the company. Musk answered, “Umm … no.” GeekWire reported the exchange the next day.
Legere made a separate offer
Legere did not simply appear in Cramer’s post: he separately volunteered to run Twitter on November 13. He proposed that Musk step back from daily business and content moderation and concentrate on product and technology, while another person ran the company. Legere added, “I’m expensive but so is what you paid for Twitter.” TheWrap reported the offer and Musk’s reply: “No.”
Musk later explained his reasoning in the same reported exchange: “It’s just that Twitter at its core is a software & servers company. The technology needs to evolve rapidly, which requires a technologist.” His stated objection was about the expertise he believed the job required—not a public assessment of Legere’s specific qualifications.

How the two proposals differed

The distinction matters: Cramer made a third-party recommendation, while Legere offered himself for the role. Neither exchange establishes that Twitter formally considered Legere or that he interviewed for the job. The reporting describes public posts, not an official hiring process.
Why Cramer named Legere
Legere had led T-Mobile as CEO and was known for using social media to engage with customers. At the 2014 GeekWire Summit, he said, “The truth is, I learn almost everything I need to know to run T-Mobile in there.” He described reading incoming tweets, forwarding them to colleagues, and tracking responses with his executive team. GeekWire covered those comments.

That background helps explain why Cramer suggested Legere for a client-facing role. It does not show that Legere was formally considered for Twitter’s CEO position. GeekWire reported that Legere announced he would step down as T-Mobile CEO in November 2019 and left the company’s board in April 2020.

The exchange captures a disagreement in November 2022 about how Twitter should be led: Cramer emphasized client-facing management, Legere proposed handling broader daily operations, and Musk said rapid technology development called for a technologist. It is a historical snapshot, not evidence about Twitter/X’s current leadership or operating conditions. The cited reports do not establish those present-day facts.
