Based on a reported family-tree reconstruction, Huang and Su are best described in standard English genealogy as first cousins once removed: they are one generation apart, rather than first cousins of the same generation.
Su has also referred to Huang more informally as a “distant relative” and a “complex second cousin type of thing.” Those descriptions are not necessarily contradictory. The first is everyday language, while “first cousins once removed” is the technical label implied by the reported family structure.

The reported family-tree connection
The relationship runs through Lisa Su’s maternal side of the family. Public reporting says that Jensen Huang’s mother was the youngest sister of Lisa Su’s maternal grandfather. That creates this simplified family tree:

Put in plain English:
- Lisa Su’s maternal grandfather and Jensen Huang’s mother were siblings.
- Their children—including Su’s mother and Huang—were first cousins.
- Lisa Su is the daughter of Huang’s first cousin.
- Huang and Su are therefore one generation apart.
The sibling connection comes from a family-history reconstruction reported by The Observer and other outlets. It should not be mistaken for a complete, officially published genealogy covering every member of the extended family.

What “first cousins once removed” means
Two people are first cousins when they share grandparents. The phrase “once removed” means that the two people are separated by one generation.
In this case, Jensen Huang and Lisa Su’s mother are first cousins in the same generation. Lisa Su is one generation below them because she is Su’s mother’s daughter. That makes Huang and Su first cousins once removed under the reported structure.
The phrase does not mean that Huang and Su are unrelated or that the relationship is necessarily extremely remote. It simply identifies the generation gap. Saying that they are merely “first cousins” can be misleading because it normally suggests that both people are in the same generation.

Why Lisa Su called Huang a “distant relative”
In a 2020 Consumer Technology Association interview, Su reportedly described Huang as a distant relative and used the phrase “some complex second cousin type of thing.” That wording should be treated as her informal characterization, not as a formal rejection of the later genealogical description.
Several factors can make both descriptions understandable:
- They are one generation apart. A person may casually describe an older relative in another generation as distant, even when the technical relationship can be defined more precisely.
- Large families have many branches. Extended-family relationships may be known socially without being expressed using exact English genealogy.
- They reportedly did not grow up as close cousins. Public accounts do not portray Huang and Su as childhood companions or members of the same household.
- Kinship terms do not translate perfectly. Taiwanese and Chinese family terms can encode age, generation and side of the family in ways that do not map neatly onto everyday American English.
The most careful summary is that Su described the connection informally as distant, while the reported sibling link supports the more specific English label “first cousins once removed.”
Did Jensen Huang and Lisa Su grow up together?
Available public reporting does not show that Huang and Su were raised together, attended the same schools or had a close childhood relationship.
Huang was born in Taipei and spent part of his childhood in Taiwan and Thailand before moving to the United States. NVIDIA’s official biography says he later studied electrical engineering at Oregon State University and earned a master’s degree from Stanford University. Su was born in Taiwan, moved to the United States as a child and grew up in New York, according to published biographical accounts. AMD’s official biography documents her education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and her subsequent engineering and executive career.
Their separate migration and education paths help explain how two relatives could become prominent figures in the same industry without growing up as close family members. Public accounts suggest that the connection became widely discussed only after both had established themselves in semiconductor leadership. Claims about precisely when each person learned of the relationship are less firmly documented and should be attributed to the reporting rather than stated as settled fact.
Two relatives leading rival chip companies
The family connection attracts attention because Huang and Su lead competing companies at the center of the graphics-processing and artificial-intelligence hardware markets.
- Jensen Huang: NVIDIA identifies him as the company’s founder and president and chief executive officer. He co-founded NVIDIA in 1993.
- Lisa Su: AMD identifies her as its chair and chief executive officer. She joined AMD in 2012 and became CEO in 2014.
NVIDIA and AMD compete across areas that include graphics processors, data-center accelerators, AI hardware, software ecosystems and related computing systems. Their shared Taiwanese background and reported family connection add a striking personal dimension to a corporate rivalry, but the relationship itself does not demonstrate collaboration, favoritism or shared business strategy.

| Point | How to understand it |
|---|---|
| Huang and Su are related | Su has publicly acknowledged the relationship, and it has been reported by multiple outlets. |
| The connection runs through Su’s maternal family | Published reporting identifies Huang’s mother and Su’s maternal grandfather as siblings. |
| They are first cousins once removed | This is the standard genealogical description implied by that reported sibling connection. |
| Su called Huang a distant relative | This was an informal description and is compatible with a technical relationship one generation removed. |
| They grew up together | Public reporting does not establish that they did. |
| The full extended family tree is publicly verified | No complete official genealogy covering every branch is available in the cited company biographies and reporting. |
Why the labels sometimes conflict
Articles and social-media posts have variously called Huang and Su cousins, distant cousins, second cousins or relatives. Some of that variation reflects ordinary language; some reflects imperfect translations of family terms; and some comes from repeating a simplified family-tree description without explaining the generations.
“Uncle” can also be misleading if used without qualification. In some family or translation contexts, an older relative may receive an uncle-like title, but that does not replace the standard English genealogical description supported by the reported structure. The safest broad wording is “relatives.” The most precise wording based on the public reconstruction is “first cousins once removed.”
The bottom line on the Huang–Su family tree
Jensen Huang and Lisa Su are publicly reported to be related through Su’s maternal family. The reported structure places Huang and Su’s mother in the same cousin generation, with Su one generation below them. That is why “first cousins once removed” is more precise than the headline-friendly claim that the NVIDIA and AMD leaders are simply first cousins.
The family link is real according to public acknowledgments and reporting, but the available evidence does not establish that Huang and Su were close childhood relatives or that their family connection influenced either executive’s career or corporate decisions.
