Japan’s 2026 deep-sea test did recover rare-earth-bearing mud from about 5.6 kilometres below the Pacific surface, but it did not uncover a commercially proven mine or show that the deposit can power the world for 700 years. That longer figure is a modeled estimate whose meaning depends on the element and seabed area being counted.
What Japan recovered from the seabed
From January 12 to February 14, 2026, the research vessel Chikyū tested a deep-sea mining system near Minamitorishima. JAMSTEC reported that the mining machine reached the seabed using 5,569 metres of pipe and that continuous lifting of rare-earth mud to the ship was confirmed on February 1. The test lifted mud from three rare-earth-rich layers over three days. JAMSTEC called it the first continuous lifting of mud to a ship from a seabed at that depth. JAMSTEC’s July 2026 release
The recovered material was mud, not refined rare-earth metals or a saleable product. JAMSTEC estimated approximately 50 tonnes of mud after excluding seawater added while loosening it. Its analysis found that medium and heavy rare earths—including yttrium, gadolinium, and dysprosium—made up about 54% of the total rare-earth content. The release said significant quantities of harmful or radioactive substances were not detected in the recovered material; that finding describes this test’s samples, not every possible future mining site or operation. What the “700 years” claim actually means
The widely repeated long-duration claim traces to a 2018 Scientific Reports study that estimated rare-earth oxide resources from geological samples and GIS-based analysis. It is a modeled comparison with annual global demand, not a forecast of how much material can be mined, processed, or supplied to buyers. The paper estimated more than 16 million tonnes of rare-earth oxides across its broader research area. In a more promising 105-square-kilometre subarea, it estimated 1.2 million tonnes. For that 105-square-kilometre area, the study’s modeled equivalents were 62 years of global annual demand for yttrium, 47 for europium, 32 for terbium, and 56 for dysprosium. The estimates differ by element because the mud’s element mix and each element’s demand differ. A figure around 700 years should not be treated as a single estimate for all rare earths or as evidence of 700 years of usable supply. Even a large modeled resource is not the same as a proven, economically recoverable reserve. Takaya et al., 2018
Why this is not yet a global supply source
The 2026 test demonstrated that a system could continuously lift rare-earth-bearing mud from extreme depth to a ship. It did not establish whether the entire chain can work economically at commercial scale. The mud must still be transported and dewatered, and the rare earths must be separated, refined, and smelted. Recovery yields, costs, energy needs, and a sustained production rate have not been demonstrated by this test. JOGMEC also lists unresolved challenges: the distribution of rich zones is unclear, commercial collection and lifting methods for depths beyond 4,000 metres remain unestablished, and development’s environmental impacts are uncertain. The announced next step is a roughly one-month full-scale mining test planned for February 2027. JAMSTEC says the plan is to transport slurry to Minamitorishima, dewater it there, send the resulting mud cake to mainland Japan, and test separation, refining, and smelting. The program plans a comprehensive industrialization assessment, including economic evaluation, by March 2028. These are future plans, not completed production or proof of commercial viability. During the 2026 test, researchers monitored suspended particles, collected environmental DNA samples, recorded underwater sound, and observed biological communities. JAMSTEC said preliminary bioassay-based analysis suggested low risk of mineral-derived pollution from this test, while noting that analysis of the observations and samples was ongoing.
