Japan Airlines (JAL) signed an agreement in July 2024 for 10 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, with an option to acquire 10 more. The “up to 20” headline figure is the maximum number covered by the agreement—not 20 confirmed firm orders. JAL said it planned to introduce the aircraft from 2028 over approximately four years.
What did Japan Airlines agree to buy?
Boeing announced the agreement at the Farnborough International Airshow on July 22, 2024. It described the deal as 10 787-9 aircraft plus options for 10 more. In its own release the following day, JAL said it had signed a purchase agreement for 10 additional 787-9s with an option for 10 more. Boeing’s announcement and JAL’s confirmation therefore distinguish the 10-aircraft purchase from the optional additional 10.

When did JAL plan to introduce the aircraft?
In July 2024, JAL said it planned to introduce the aircraft over approximately four years, starting in 2028. That was the airline’s rollout plan at the time of the announcement, not confirmation of subsequent delivery dates or completed fleet additions. The announcements cited here do not establish whether JAL later exercised the options or how many aircraft have since been delivered.

Which routes and regions were they intended to support?
JAL said the aircraft would support capacity growth in international operations, particularly in North America, Asia, and India. Those regions were also identified as international growth priorities in the airline’s March 2024 fleet plan, which already included 10 Boeing 787-9s among a broader set of planned new aircraft. JAL’s March 2024 fleet-plan announcement provides that earlier context.
The statements describe JAL’s intended use and growth priorities; they do not specify individual routes, frequencies, or final aircraft assignments.

What did the companies say about the aircraft?
Boeing stated that the 787-9 has a range of up to 7,565 nautical miles (14,010 km). This is the manufacturer’s published specification, not an independent assessment of the aircraft’s operating performance on a particular JAL route.
JAL Executive Officer of Procurement Yukio Nakagawa said the order reflected the airline’s commitment to introducing modern, more fuel-efficient aircraft and reducing CO₂ emissions. Boeing senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing Brad McMullen called the agreement a testament to the 787-9’s versatility and efficiency for JAL’s long-haul routes. These are company statements explaining the parties’ rationale, not independent findings about emissions or passenger experience.

What was the order’s significance for JAL?
At the time of its July 2024 announcement, JAL said the JAL Group already had more than 50 Boeing 787-series aircraft in its fleet. The additional purchase agreement was part of its stated effort to expand international capacity using the 787-9. That fleet figure is historical context from 2024, not a current fleet count.
