Boeing expects to complete production of the commercial 767 program by 2027, according to its filing for the quarter ended June 30, 2026. That is an expected completion year, not a published date for the final airplane. The KC-46A tanker derivative is a separate part of the 767 assembly line and is not included in Boeing’s announced end to the commercial program.
When will Boeing stop making the 767?
Boeing’s second-quarter 2026 filing says it expects to complete production of the 767 commercial program by 2027. The company has not specified a final assembly or delivery date in the cited materials. Its October 2024 employee message said it planned to build and deliver the remaining customer-ordered 767 Freighters, then conclude commercial production in 2027; the later filing retains that expected year.
Kelly Ortberg, Boeing’s president and CEO, put the plan this way in his October 2024 message to employees: “We plan to build and deliver the remaining 767 Freighters ordered by our customers and then conclude production of the commercial program in 2027.”
What ends—and what continues?
The announcement concerns the commercial 767 program, including passenger and freighter aircraft. Boeing’s filing also describes a 767 assembly line that includes a derivative supporting the KC-46A tanker program. The tanker work is distinct from commercial 767 production; Boeing’s expected 2027 completion date should not be read as the end of all 767-derived aircraft production.

The filing gives a targeted assembly-line rate of approximately three aircraft per month, discussing the commercial program and KC-46A derivative line together. It does not establish that this rate applies only to commercial aircraft.
Why the 767’s production ending matters to fans
The 767 has had passenger, cargo and tanker roles. Boeing’s product-history material says the 767 Freighter can carry 59 tons (53 tonnes) of revenue cargo with intercontinental range. That capacity is Boeing’s specification, not an independently measured figure.
Rank #2
Boeing’s 2024 outlook projected 67% growth in the global freighter fleet over the next 20 years and estimated that approximately 45% of forecast freighter deliveries would replace retiring airplanes. These are Boeing forecasts, not observed results or guaranteed demand. The projections help explain the continuing role of cargo aircraft, but they do not change the company’s stated plan to end commercial 767 production.

Completing production does not ground 767s already in service. The cited sources do not establish how many passenger or cargo 767s will remain in operation when commercial production ends, or a single retirement schedule for airlines and cargo operators.

One airline’s retirement history illustrates the distinction: Air Canada said its June 2, 2020 Montreal–Toronto flight AC439 marked the end of its mainline 767 fleet, and it also said it would retire its Rouge 767s. That was Air Canada’s fleet decision, not a global retirement date for the aircraft type.
