The Publix-associated AquaStar shrimp recall is part of a wider FDA recall series involving frozen shrimp linked to Indonesian processor PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati (BMS Foods). The October 17, 2025 notice is precautionary: AquaStar said its listed products had not tested positive for cesium-137 (Cs-137), but may have been prepared, packed, or held under conditions where exposure was possible. Check the exact product and lot details in the FDA notices before deciding whether your package is included.

Which shrimp products are covered by the AquaStar notice?

AquaStar (USA) Corp announced the voluntary recall on October 17, 2025. The FDA-hosted notice names products sold under AquaStar, Best Yet, Waterfront Bistro, and Publix brands. It concerns a limited quantity of frozen raw shrimp imported from Indonesia. See the FDA notice for AquaStar’s recall for the specific product and package identifiers.

The company said the shrimp may have been prepared, packed, or held under conditions in which it could have been exposed to very low levels of Cs-137. AquaStar’s announcement, as posted by FDA, states: “None of the aforementioned or below listed product ever tested positive for Cs-137.” No illnesses had been reported when the company announced the recall.

How to check whether your package is included

  1. Find the brand and product name. Compare them with the products named in the detailed FDA recall notice; a brand name alone does not establish that every item from that brand is affected.
  2. Compare package identifiers. Check the package details, including lot or other identifying information, against the FDA notice. Do not rely only on where you bought the shrimp.
  3. Check FDA’s current recall index. The FDA’s 2025 frozen shrimp recall index includes the AquaStar announcement within a broader series tied to BMS Foods. It also lists later Market 32 and Waterfront Bistro recalls announced December 19, 2025, among other notices.

Because the recall series includes multiple notices and products, use each notice’s package identifiers to make the match rather than assuming that every frozen shrimp product, every Publix purchase, or every product from a named brand is included.

What to do with shrimp that matches a recall notice

  • Do not eat it. Follow the AquaStar notice: dispose of the affected shrimp or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
  • Use the notice’s identifiers to confirm coverage. If you are uncertain, consult the detailed recall notice and FDA’s current index before treating a package as included.
  • Ask a healthcare provider about suspected elevated exposure. A recall listing does not establish that a particular consumer was exposed. FDA identifies the health concern from longer-term, repeated low-dose exposure as an elevated cancer risk due to DNA damage; people who suspect elevated exposure should speak with a healthcare provider. See FDA’s consumer safety alert for imported frozen shrimp.

Why products can be recalled without a positive test

FDA’s October 2026 response explains the distinction between a positive test and a precautionary recall. FDA says its first Cs-137 detection in this incident was in one sample of frozen shrimp from Indonesia in early August 2025; that shipment did not enter U.S. commerce. The agency says no product that tested positive or alerted for Cs-137 entered U.S. commerce. Products can nevertheless appear in recalls because they may have been prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions. Read FDA’s response on imported foods potentially contaminated with Cs-137 for its current account.

FDA also describes import certification requirements effective October 31, 2025, for shrimp from Java and Lampung in Sumatra. A designated certifying entity must provide assurances that covered products are not contaminated with Cs-137. FDA lists a derived intervention level of 1,200 Bq/kg. That figure is regulatory context, not a measurement of a recalled retail package or a consumer method for determining whether food is safe.
