How to redeem a code without being charged again

Microsoft’s support instructions for an existing subscription are to turn off recurring billing, let the current subscription expire, and then redeem the prepaid code through the Microsoft account redemption flow. The instructions address when to redeem a code; they do not establish a price for codes at any retailer.

Understand recurring billing before the prepaid period ends

Xbox says recurring billing is on by default and a subscription continues automatically at the then-current regular price unless you cancel or switch recurring billing off.
