No public announcement reviewed here confirms that Wells Fargo is in talks with Kraken parent Payward to provide crypto trading liquidity. Nasdaq said it agreed to invest in Payward and named Wells Fargo as Nasdaq’s exclusive capital markets adviser—not as Payward’s liquidity provider or a party to a direct deal.
What was announced—and who the parties are
In a September 10, 2026 announcement, Nasdaq said Nasdaq Ventures had agreed to invest $100 million in Payward, Kraken’s parent company. Nasdaq described the investment as deepening an existing relationship. The $100 million is Nasdaq Ventures’ announced investment agreement; it is not a Wells Fargo investment in Payward.
Nasdaq also said Payward would adopt Nasdaq’s market-surveillance technology across Payward’s trading venues. The release names Wells Fargo as Nasdaq’s exclusive capital markets adviser on the transaction. That advisory role is distinct from being Payward’s trading-liquidity counterparty.
What the proposed Nasdaq–Payward work involves
Nasdaq and Payward said they would continue developing operational and commercial infrastructure for Nasdaq Equity Tokens, connecting the proposed design with Payward’s xStocks ecosystem. The announced areas of future work include distribution, settlement, trading and interoperability. Nasdaq gave an expected launch in the second quarter of 2027; that is a forward-looking target, not confirmation that the product or capabilities are already live. Nasdaq’s release cautions that forward-looking statements are not guarantees and actual results may differ.

What “liquidity” means in Payward’s services description
Payward describes Payward Services as business-to-business infrastructure for clients including fintechs, banks, brokerages, payment providers and global platforms. Its description says the offering combines access to trading, payment, funding and digital-asset services with coordinated liquidity, custody, compliance, risk management and settlement capabilities. This is Payward’s account of its own offering; it does not establish a Wells Fargo relationship.
Payward also lists stablecoin payment and funding rails; digital and tokenized asset markets; staking and lending; and global fiat and crypto funding, including on- and off-ramps. Its Payward Services description notes that geographic restrictions apply, that relevant custody entities are not equivalent to FDIC-insured bank deposits, and that derivatives and other financial instruments carry significant risk.

What remains unconfirmed
The public sources cited here do not substantiate a direct Wells Fargo–Payward liquidity partnership or negotiations over one. That is a limit on what the public record establishes, not proof that private discussions have never occurred. The existence or terms of any unannounced discussions remain unresolved.
Nasdaq President Tal Cohen’s statement about “how efficiently and seamlessly capital and assets move across the financial system with durable, high-integrity liquidity” appeared in Nasdaq’s announcement about the Nasdaq–Payward relationship. It should not be read as confirmation of a Wells Fargo–Payward deal.
