USDT is designed to track the U.S. dollar and can make it easier to move dollar-linked value between supported blockchain networks. That can be useful if you already use crypto exchanges, wallets, or payment services—but USDT is not cash, a bank deposit, or a risk-free way to hold savings. Its market price can move away from $1, and direct redemption with Tether is conditional on eligibility, verification, minimums, fees, and service availability.
Is USDT stable?
USDT, also called USD₮, is Tether’s dollar-linked stablecoin. Tether says its tokens are pegged one-to-one to matching fiat currencies and backed by reserves. That describes the issuer’s design and target; it does not guarantee that USDT will trade for exactly $1 on every exchange, that every holder can redeem directly with Tether, or that access will be uninterrupted.
USDT is also not U.S. currency or a bank deposit. Tether’s terms say reserves can include cash, cash equivalents, and other assets, including loan receivables and assets held by affiliates. Those terms matter because reserve backing is not identical to cash held in an account for each token holder.
What reserve reports tell you
Tether says it typically publishes circulation information daily and reserve information quarterly, but it does not promise a fixed update interval or time, and data may be delayed. Its quarterly reserve reports are prepared by BDO Italia. Tether’s disclosure document says these reports are not financial statements; they present selected financial information from accounting records under stated scope and assumptions. Read a report’s date, scope, and wording rather than treating it as a full financial-statement audit or a continuously updated view of reserves.

The International Monetary Fund’s December 2025 analysis described USDT and USDC reserves as consisting mostly of short-term U.S. Treasuries, reverse repos, and deposits, while noting bitcoin and gold in Tether’s mix. That is historical analysis, not a current reserve breakdown. A reserve figure or composition claim should be tied to a dated document.
What are the advantages of USDT?
A dollar-linked unit within digital-asset services
For someone already using crypto exchanges, wallets, payment processors, or other services that support USDT, it can provide a dollar-linked unit for transfers or recordkeeping without first moving value through a conventional bank payment in every transaction. Its intended dollar link also means it is generally designed to be less volatile than crypto assets whose prices are not pegged to a currency. These are potential conveniences, not a promise that USDT is cheaper, faster, or safer than a bank or payment provider for a particular payment.
Transferability across supported networks
Tether issues USDT on multiple blockchain protocols. That can give users more than one route for sending or receiving it, but a network is not interchangeable with every other network. The sender and recipient must support the same protocol and the destination address must be compatible. A network mismatch can make recovery difficult or lead to loss.

Not a yield-bearing cash substitute
USDT itself does not pay holders a return. The IMF’s October 2025 Global Financial Stability Report noted that stablecoins typically do not pay yield, which can make them less attractive than money-market alternatives for cash management. A service that offers a return on USDT is a separate arrangement with its own terms and risks; do not treat it as an automatic feature of the token.

How can USDT help with financial management?
USDT may fit a narrow role: moving dollar-denominated value within digital-asset services or holding a dollar-linked balance while using those services. Whether that is useful depends on what you need to do next. Network fees, exchange or intermediary charges, spreads, access to local cash-out services, and the recipient’s supported networks can outweigh the convenience.
- For transfers: compare the full cost and confirm that the recipient can receive USDT on the exact network you plan to use.
- For short-term balances inside a crypto service: consider whether the convenience is worth issuer, platform, liquidity, and price-deviation risks.
- For savings or emergency funds: do not assume a dollar peg provides bank-deposit protections, guaranteed access, or interest. Compare the risks and terms with the cash-management options available to you.
- For budgeting: account for conversion spreads and fees, and remember that a dollar-denominated token balance is not the same as dollars available in your bank account.
Stablecoin transaction-volume estimates also need careful interpretation. The IMF reported in August 2026 that stablecoin market capitalization was around $300 billion after nearly tripling from 2021 to 2025. It cited estimates of more than $30 trillion in total stablecoin transaction volume in 2025, including $6.1 trillion cross-border, and a Bank for International Settlements estimate of $390 billion in payment-related stablecoin flows. These figures measure different activity: transaction volume is not the same as payment use. The IMF put the global cross-border payments market at around one quadrillion U.S. dollars annually and noted that cross-border stablecoin payment flows remain small in comparison.

Can you redeem USDT for U.S. dollars?
Tether’s terms provide for redemption at the peg subject to its terms, customer verification, minimums, requirements, and fees. Tether may also delay or suspend access to services in circumstances listed in its terms. Having USDT in a wallet or on an exchange does not, by itself, establish that you can redeem directly with Tether.
Tether’s published fee page lists a $100,000 minimum for acquisition or redemption, a redemption fee equal to the greater of $1,000 or 0.1%, a 0.1% acquisition fee, and a $150 verification fee. Fees and eligibility can change, so check the live terms before relying on these figures. An exchange or another intermediary may have different requirements, costs, spreads, and cash-out options.
Jurisdiction can affect issuer access. Tether’s page for U.S. residents says it stopped serving individual and corporate U.S. customers for direct issuance or redemption in 2018, with a stated narrow exception for eligible contract participants. That historical service statement should not be read as a complete account of current U.S. law or as confirmation of a particular person’s present eligibility. Check the current rules and the service route available to you.

Which network should you use to send USDT?
Choose a network only after confirming that both the sending service and the recipient support it. Tether specifically warns users to select the right protocol and destination address. The token name alone is not enough: a deposit address or transfer instruction for one network may not work on another.
- Ask the recipient which USDT network they accept. Do not infer network support from a wallet or exchange supporting USDT in general.
- Match the network at both ends. Check the exact protocol shown in the sending and receiving services before entering the address.
- Review the full cost and any limits. Network fees, intermediary charges, and conversion costs can vary; the cheapest route is useful only if the recipient can receive it.
- Verify the destination details before sending. If the service supports it and the amount justifies the cost, consider a small test transfer first. Do not assume a mistaken transfer can be reversed.
What are the risks of holding USDT?
Market price and liquidity
A one-dollar target does not ensure every market trade clears at $1. The price available to you can depend on the venue, liquidity, and trading conditions. If you need dollars immediately, selling USDT on an exchange is not the same as redeeming with the issuer.
Reserve and redemption access
Holders depend on the issuer’s reserve arrangements and on practical access to a redemption route. Reserve reports have a defined date and scope, while direct redemption has conditions. If you rely on an intermediary instead, you also depend on that service’s availability and terms.

Network and transaction risk
Multiple supported networks can improve flexibility, but they can also fragment liquidity and increase the chance of compatibility errors. The IMF’s October 2025 Global Financial Stability Report noted that stablecoins on separate blockchains can raise transaction costs and fragment payment systems. Fees and congestion can also differ by network and service.
Wider financial-system risks
The IMF has identified possible risks involving circumvention of capital-flow management measures, exchange-rate pressure, financial stability, reserve concentration, and the effect large redemptions could have on markets for assets held by issuers. These are potential system-level concerns, not a claim that every USDT transfer produces those outcomes or that each holder faces the same exposure.
How to compare USDT with another way to hold or move money
There is no universal winner. Compare the specific product, provider, jurisdiction, and use case rather than relying on a general claim that one route is safer or cheaper.

| Reserve disclosure | How recent is the report? What does it cover, and is it a reserve or assurance report rather than a financial statement? |
| Network support | Which networks do you and the recipient support? What are the network-specific costs and operational risks? |
| Liquidity and price | Can you sell or redeem when needed, and what happens if the market price deviates from the peg? |
| Purpose and yield | Do you need payment or settlement utility, or a cash-management product that may pay interest under separate terms? |
