Yes—Total Wireless can be worth it, but mainly if Verizon already works well where you live, work, and travel. Its strongest current value is Total MAX 5G BYO, advertised at $25 per month with Auto Pay for customers who bring a compatible, unlocked phone. The plan includes unlimited premium data, 5G Ultra Wideband access, unlimited hotspot capped at 5 Mbps, and international benefits.
The bigger risk is not necessarily network performance. It is the service experience around activation, number porting, billing, Auto Pay, account changes, and technical support. Users report excellent value after successful setup, while others describe frustrating porting failures, incorrect charges, and difficult support interactions. Those reports are anecdotal, not proof of a universal failure rate—but they are important risks to weigh before switching.

Quick verdict
- Best for: People who want Verizon-network coverage at a lower prepaid price, especially BYOD customers, families, and travelers.
- Best-value candidate: Total MAX 5G BYO, if your phone passes the compatibility check and the $25 Auto Pay price appears at checkout.
- Avoid if: You need high-speed hotspot, extensive customer support, guaranteed smooth activation, or reliable service in an area where Verizon is weak.
- Biggest concern: Porting, billing, Auto Pay, and support complaints—not necessarily everyday network performance.

Current Total Wireless plans and prices
Total’s advertised prices can depend on Auto Pay, whether you bring a phone, the number of lines, new-customer eligibility, and current promotions. Confirm the final price and terms during checkout.
| Plan | Advertised signal | Key features | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total STARTER | $35/month with Auto Pay; $40 first month | Unlimited 5G data, 10GB hotspot, Canada and Mexico roaming, calling to 85-plus countries, and texting to 200-plus destinations | Does not include the higher-tier premium-data and Ultra Wideband package shown on MAX plans |
| Total MAX 5G BYO | $25/month with Auto Pay | Unlimited premium data, 5G Ultra Wideband, unlimited hotspot up to 5 Mbps, international calling and texting, roaming in 140-plus countries, and 100GB cloud storage | Requires a compatible unlocked phone and SIM |
| Total MAX 5G | Higher-tier phone plan | Unlimited premium data, 5G Ultra Wideband, unlimited hotspot up to 5 Mbps, and broad international benefits | Usually less compelling than BYO if you already own a compatible phone |
| Total ALL ACCESS | Premium tier | Unlimited hotspot up to 10 Mbps, Disney+ Premium for the life of the plan, international features, and 100GB cloud storage | Higher price; perks only add value if you will actually use them |
For many customers, MAX 5G BYO is the most interesting option because it combines the lowest advertised price with premium data and unlimited hotspot. However, “unlimited hotspot” means unlimited usage at up to 5 Mbps, not unlimited full-speed tethering.
Is Total Wireless really on Verizon’s network?
Yes. Total Wireless advertises access to Verizon’s 5G network. But using Verizon’s network does not make Total Wireless identical to Verizon postpaid. Plan features, support, account management, roaming, device policies, and network treatment can differ.
Total’s current BYOD comparison specifically advertises “no network deprioritization or throttling” for Total MAX 5G BYO. That is the company’s claim and should not automatically be generalized to every Total plan. The lower-cost legacy-style Unlimited plan, for example, says data may be temporarily slower than other traffic during congestion and limits video streaming to up to 480p.
The practical rule is simple: if Verizon performs well in your home, workplace, and regular travel locations, Total may provide very good value. If Verizon is unreliable there, Total will not solve the underlying coverage problem.

Coverage maps are estimates. Buildings, terrain, foliage, congestion, outages, device differences, and other conditions can produce slow or unavailable service even inside a mapped coverage area. Check the official coverage information, but also test Verizon in the exact places that matter to you.
What users like about Total Wireless
Users who report successful activation commonly praise several things:
- Low cost for Verizon coverage: The $25 BYO MAX offer can be substantially cheaper than Verizon postpaid for someone who mainly wants unlimited phone service.
- Strong everyday performance: Customers in areas with good Verizon coverage often describe reliable calls, data, and travel performance.
- Hotspot value: Unlimited hotspot at up to 5 Mbps can be useful for email, browsing, music, standard-definition video, and occasional remote work.
- International features: Qualifying plans include calling, texting, and roaming benefits that can be valuable for ordinary trips.
- Family savings: Multiline pricing can make the effective cost more attractive, although the exact discount should be checked at checkout.
A recent Reddit user report described the $25 BYO plan’s hotspot and overall value positively while noting that coverage varies and that recent website and plan changes caused confusion. Other family-plan users have also described good service after switching. These are individual experiences, not controlled network tests or representative surveys.
What users dislike—and how seriously to take it
Recurring complaints on review platforms and discussion forums include:
- Number-porting failures or delays
- Activation problems
- Auto Pay not renewing correctly
- Unexpected or incorrect charges
- Promotional pricing not being applied
- Difficulty reaching a knowledgeable support representative
- Account-migration problems for former Total by Verizon customers
- Visual voicemail and device-specific setup issues
Trustpilot reviews contain serious complaints involving billing, shipping, support, porting, and reliability. The older Total by Verizon review page contains similar complaints, but it should not be treated as a current, apples-to-apples measure because the brand and plans have changed.

Trustpilot and Reddit are self-selected sources. They are useful for identifying possible failure modes, not for calculating how frequently those failures happen. The fairest conclusion is that many customers appear satisfied after setup, while activation and account-management problems are credible recurring risks.
Hotspot: “unlimited” does not mean full speed
| Plan | Hotspot allowance | Speed cap |
|---|---|---|
| STARTER | 10GB | Up to 5 Mbps |
| MAX 5G and MAX 5G BYO | Unlimited | Up to 5 Mbps |
| ALL ACCESS | Unlimited | Up to 10 Mbps |
At 5 Mbps, hotspot is generally adequate for browsing, email, music, standard-definition video, and some remote work. It is a poor substitute for home broadband if you regularly download large files, stream in 4K, install large games, back up photos, or connect several demanding devices. Total’s terms may also impose device or usage restrictions on hotspot features, so read the current terms before relying on it as your primary internet connection.
International service: useful for travel, not living abroad
Current advertised benefits vary by plan:
- STARTER: Roaming in Canada and Mexico.
- MAX 5G, MAX 5G BYO, and ALL ACCESS: Roaming in 140-plus countries.
- Qualifying higher-tier plans: Up to 10GB of international roaming data and 300 calling minutes per month, subject to the plan’s terms.
International service is limited to covered countries and plan allowances. Total says the phone must first be registered and used on its U.S. network, and the service is intended primarily for U.S. use. Extended or unauthorized roaming can lead to restrictions or termination. Read the international roaming information and full terms before treating the plan as a substitute for a local SIM or an international-focused carrier.
Is the five-year price guarantee unconditional?
No. Total advertises a five-year price guarantee on eligible plans, but the terms limit it to qualifying new subscribers and eligible offers. The guarantee may be affected if service lapses, is suspended or terminated, or you move to an ineligible plan. Eligibility can also depend on whether you had Total Wireless or Total by Verizon service during the preceding 90 days.

- ✅ Genuine Verizon SIM Card – Official, carrier-certified SIM for Verizon Wireless.
- 📡 5G + 4G LTE Ready – Supports the fastest Verizon data networks for reliable connectivity
- 🔒 NFC Enabled – Allows secure mobile payments and contactless pairing.
- 🔁 For New Activation or Replacement – Use for new devices or to replace a damaged SIM.
- 🔌 Nano Size (4FF) – Fits all modern smartphones (e.g., iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Pixel, etc.)
An unlocked phone is not automatically compatible. Imported models may lack required Verizon bands or certification. eSIM and physical-SIM support can differ by device. A phone that works on Verizon postpaid is not guaranteed to activate on every Total plan. Carrier financing, a blacklist, or an unpaid device balance can also prevent activation.
How to switch with less risk
Before you port your number
- Confirm Verizon coverage at home, work, and frequent destinations.
- Check your phone’s IMEI with Total and confirm it is unlocked.
- Get your current carrier’s account number, transfer PIN, and billing ZIP exactly as recorded.
- Check whether the advertised price requires Auto Pay, BYOD, new-customer status, or multiple lines.
- Save screenshots of the plan, promotion, price guarantee, and checkout total.
- Do not cancel your old service before the number port completes.
- Do not switch immediately before a trip, work deadline, or other event where losing service would be costly.
After activation
- Test outgoing and incoming calls.
- Send and receive text messages, including group texts if relevant.
- Test mobile data, voicemail, hotspot, and Wi-Fi calling if you use them.
- Confirm that your original number—not a temporary number—is active.
- Check the renewal date and amount in your account.
- Verify that Auto Pay is enabled and that the payment card is valid.
Keep Wi-Fi available and maintain a backup contact method during activation. Save confirmation emails, chat transcripts, and support case numbers.
Who should choose Total Wireless?
Total Wireless is a strong candidate if:
- Verizon is the best network at your key locations.
- You own a compatible unlocked phone.
- You want low-cost unlimited data.
- 5 Mbps hotspot is enough for your needs.
- You value international calling or travel roaming.
- You are comfortable checking billing and troubleshooting basic setup issues.
- You can benefit from multiline pricing.
Who should avoid it?
Look elsewhere if:
- Verizon is already weak in your home or workplace.
- You need high-speed hotspot for work or home broadband replacement.
- You depend on fast, hands-on customer support.
- Your phone is locked, financed, imported, or difficult to verify.
- You frequently live outside the United States.
- A failed port would create serious professional or personal harm.
- You expect Verizon postpaid-style retail stores, financing, and account support.
Total Wireless compared with alternatives
Compare carriers by network performance, data priority, hotspot rules, international benefits, support, and total cost—not just the advertised monthly price.
- Visible: A natural Verizon-network alternative for people who prefer a different prepaid workflow or simpler plan choices. Compare hotspot limits, international features, and support.
- US Mobile: Worth considering if network flexibility or more control over plan configuration matters.
- Mint Mobile: A possible low-cost option for people comfortable with its network arrangement, multi-month prepayment, hotspot policy, and international add-ons.
- Verizon postpaid: Better suited to customers who prioritize retail support, device financing, domestic roaming, or bundled services.
- Consumer Cellular: Potentially better for older or lighter-data users who value simplicity and support over unlimited hotspot and premium 5G features.
Final recommendation
Total Wireless is worth considering—not blindly switching to. For a technically comfortable BYOD customer in a strong Verizon coverage area, Total MAX 5G BYO could be an unusually good value: low advertised pricing, premium data, Ultra Wideband access, and unlimited hotspot with a 5 Mbps ceiling.
