GameStop is a retailer under pressure, not a business whose inevitable failure has been established. Its sales base has shrunk, but profitability has improved, collectibles now account for a much larger share of sales, and management is pursuing a strategy built around cost control and capital allocation. Whether that strategy can deliver durable growth is still an open question.
What GameStop’s latest results show
The clearest reading is a mixed one: lower revenue alongside stronger operating performance. In its September 8, 2026 earnings release, GameStop reported second-quarter net sales of $790.2 million for the 13 weeks ended August 1, down from $972.2 million in the prior-year quarter. The company attributed the decline mainly to the prior-year Nintendo Switch 2 launch, planned store closures and the divestiture of its France operations.

Over the same comparison, operating income rose to $160.2 million from $66.4 million, while selling, general and administrative expenses fell to $187.1 million from $218.8 million. GameStop called the operating-income figure its highest second-quarter result in company history. Net income was $298.7 million, including gains and other items; the company also reported adjusted net income of $161.1 million. Adjusted net income is a non-GAAP measure, so it should not be confused with the standard net-income figure.
The annual results show that the improvement is not simply a story of sales recovery. For the fiscal year ended January 31, 2026, GameStop reported net sales of $3.630 billion, down from $3.823 billion in fiscal 2024. Operating income improved to $232.1 million from an operating loss of $26.2 million, and net income rose to $418.4 million from $131.3 million. The change in profitability coincided with lower sales and reduced expenses; it does not establish that demand has returned to growth.

Can collectibles replace declining game sales?
Collectibles are the strongest evidence that GameStop’s business mix is changing. In the second quarter, the category generated $356.3 million in net sales, up 57% year over year and equal to 45.1% of total net sales. A year earlier, collectibles represented 23.4% of sales, according to the September 8 earnings release.
That is a substantial shift, but a larger share of a smaller sales base is not the same as proof that collectibles can fully replace legacy video-game and pre-owned sales. The results establish rapid growth in the category for that quarter; they do not show whether that pace will continue, whether it will persist through different seasons, or whether it will be enough to produce durable company-wide growth.
GameStop’s fiscal 2025 annual report also describes Power Packs, a product initiative launched in 2025 with Collectors Holdings’ PSA division. Customers can buy graded PSA cards stored in the PSA vault and choose to sell, trade, ship or hold them. The report characterizes early beta results as promising, but that description is management’s assessment, not evidence that the initiative has reached commercial scale.

What is GameStop changing?
In its September 2026 Form 10-Q, GameStop describes its strategy as two complementary pillars: operational excellence and capital allocation. The first focuses on optimizing stores and generating cash from the legacy retail business. The second treats the balance sheet as a strategic asset and includes evaluating investments, acquisitions and control transactions.
Store footprint and cost control
GameStop said its annual portfolio review resulted in 727 U.S. store closures during fiscal 2025. It also said it did not anticipate significant U.S. closures in fiscal 2026, describing the domestic footprint as part of its logistics infrastructure. Those are management’s plans and rationale; they are not an independent assessment of whether the retained stores are economically attractive. The contrast captures the trade-off: closures can reduce costs, while a physical network may support logistics and retail operations.
Capital allocation and eBay
GameStop reported holding approximately 43.4 million eBay shares, with a fair value of about $4.9 billion, in its September 8 release. An earlier company outlook statement in June said leadership remained focused on advancing a proposed eBay acquisition. The acquisition had not been completed in the disclosures cited here: the September Form 10-Q said there were no binding agreements for a specific transaction at that time and that opportunities requiring significant capital remained under evaluation.

The reported eBay holding is distinct from GameStop’s reported liquidity. At August 1, the company listed $5.4 billion in cash, cash equivalents, marketable securities, digital assets and related receivables. That total included $5.1 billion in cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities, plus $0.3 billion in digital assets and related receivables. After privately negotiated exchanges of approximately $1.4 billion in convertible notes completed on September 3, GameStop reported about $2.8 billion in total long-term debt. These figures describe substantial financial resources alongside meaningful debt and investment exposure; they do not, by themselves, determine whether the operating business can grow.

On September 8, 2026, GameStop raised its fiscal 2026 adjusted EBITDA outlook to more than $650 million, from more than $600 million in its June 26 outlook. Adjusted EBITDA was $339.7 million in the first six months of fiscal 2026. The revised figure is preliminary, forward-looking management guidance and a non-GAAP measure—not a result already achieved. GameStop cautioned that actual results may differ materially.
The company’s own risk disclosures identify uncertainties directly relevant to its plans:

- Competition, the cyclical nature of video games and changes in technology or consumer behavior could weaken demand for its legacy business.
- Results depend on timely vendor products and are exposed to seasonality, holiday sales and the popularity of trading cards.
- Maintaining its retail and e-commerce experience and executing cost reductions are ongoing challenges.
- The proposed eBay acquisition and the concentration of investment holdings create capital-allocation and investment risks.
These risks matter because a strong balance sheet or a fast-growing category cannot guarantee that GameStop will successfully execute its plans. The evidence supports a company attempting to reshape itself, not a settled conclusion that its turnaround has succeeded or failed.
How to judge whether the turnaround is working
Rather than treating a single quarter or the cash balance as a verdict, watch whether the pieces of the strategy reinforce one another over time:
- Revenue and operating performance: Do sales stabilize or grow while operating income remains positive, or does improved profitability depend mainly on continued expense reductions?
- Business mix: Does collectibles growth continue, and does it meaningfully offset pressure in games and pre-owned products?
- Retail footprint: Does the retained store network support logistics and sales effectively after the closures?
- Use of capital: Do investments or acquisitions create operating value, and how do they affect debt and exposure to concentrated holdings?
- Forecast versus delivery: Does GameStop meet its guidance through reported results, rather than relying on outlook statements alone?
Until those questions are answered by subsequent results, the most accurate description is that GameStop is in a consequential transition. The company has demonstrated improved profitability and a rapidly growing collectibles category, but falling sales and execution risks leave the durability of that progress unproven.
