Warnings about a crash are forecasts, not official reserve statistics—and gold and Bitcoin do not behave alike.
Is the US dollar about to collapse?
The latest IMF reserve figures cited here show the dollar’s share of reported global foreign-exchange reserves fell from 57.18% in 2026 Q1 to 56.70% in 2026 Q2. It remained the largest reported currency component. The IMF said dollar claims were largely unchanged and that the share shift reflected increased euro and other-currency holdings. That distinction matters: a reserve share can fall because the composition of reserves changes, without the dollar itself collapsing. COFER describes official foreign-exchange reserves; it does not measure every use of dollars in trade and finance or every dollar held by private investors. The figures therefore show a change in reserve composition, not a complete measure of the dollar’s role or a timetable for its decline.

Who issued the collapse warning?
The headline does not identify the warning’s issuer. One specific report to compare it with is a January 2026 article by Bitcoin.com News, which attributed a warning that a dollar collapse was unfolding and Bitcoin faced a crash to Peter Schiff, an economist and gold advocate. Schiff’s view is a commentator’s forecast, not an IMF finding. The available reporting does not establish that his warning is the particular one meant by the headline, so the two should not be treated as the same claim without confirmation.
Does gold demand support a shift away from dollars?
There are signs of interest in reserve diversification, but they indicate expectations and buying activity—not certainty about a dollar collapse.

- Central-bank expectations: In the World Gold Council’s 2026 survey, 89% of respondents expected global central-bank gold holdings to increase over the following 12 months. - Gold demand in 2025: Total gold demand, including over-the-counter demand, exceeded 5,000 tonnes for the first time, while bar and coin buying reached a 12-year high, according to the World Gold Council. See the 2025 gold-demand report.
- Central-bank purchases: Central banks made net purchases of 863 tonnes in 2025. That was below the more than 1,000 tonnes purchased in each of the previous three years, but above the 473-tonne annual average for 2010–2021. See the central-bank data.
Together, these figures support the case that some reserve managers and investors want more gold exposure. They do not show that gold prices must rise, that dollar reserves will disappear, or that a currency crisis is imminent.

No. The assets differ in their history, form and reported behavior during market stress. The National reported that gold and Bitcoin rose together in August 2026, an unusual pairing, while analysts it quoted distinguished gold’s long history as a store of value from Bitcoin’s greater volatility and potential to behave like a risk asset under genuine stress. How should a personal-finance reader assess the warning?
Rather than treating a dramatic forecast as a buy signal, check how a potential loss or a change in currency value would affect your own finances.
- Separate data from predictions. Reserve shares and gold purchases describe reported holdings and activity; claims about a coming collapse or crash are forecasts.
- Consider your time horizon and liquidity needs. Money you may need soon has a different purpose from an investment you can hold through substantial price swings.
- Understand what you would own. Physical bullion requires attention to premiums, safe storage, authenticity and the terms for resale. Bitcoin’s digital form does not make its price stable.
- Do not assume the assets move together. Gold and Bitcoin rose together in one reported period, but that episode does not guarantee they will respond alike to the next bout of market stress.
The figures and commentary above cannot determine which asset, if any, suits an individual’s circumstances. A decision should fit a broader financial plan rather than depend on an unverified interpretation of a warning.
