A savings account can offer a genuinely high annual percentage yield (APY), but the biggest number in an ad may apply only for a limited time, to a qualifying balance, or after you meet specific requirements. Before opening an account, check the current rate disclosure for the standard APY, how long any promotion lasts, and what you must do to qualify.
What a high APY does—and does not—tell you
APY is a standardized way to compare the interest an account could earn over a year, including the effect of compounding. It is not a promise that a variable savings rate will remain unchanged for the next 12 months. Under the CFPB’s Regulation DD calculation rules, an ordinary savings account’s APY is calculated on an assumed 365-day term, with principal and interest assumed to remain on deposit. For an introductory variable-rate offer, the calculation accounts for the promotional rate followed by the ordinary variable rate for the rest of the year. See Regulation DD Appendix A.

That distinction matters: the APY is useful for comparison under stated assumptions, while the rate itself may change after you open the account. The CFPB’s advertising rule requires a statement that a variable rate may change after opening. It also says an advertisement must not be misleading or misrepresent the deposit contract. Read Regulation DD § 1030.8.
What “up to” can mean
A headline rate may be available only if you meet conditions or keep a particular amount in the account. Read the account’s rate sheet and agreement, not just the ad. Look for:

- Promotion length: Does the boosted APY end after a stated number of months or on a particular date?
- Requirements: Must you make qualifying monthly deposits, receive direct deposits, or complete another action?
- Balance rules: Is there a minimum balance to earn the advertised APY, a balance cap, or a tiered rate? A minimum to open is not necessarily the same as a minimum to earn the quoted APY.
- After-promotion rate: What standard APY applies when the promotional period ends, and can it change?
- Fees and access: Are there monthly fees, transfer or withdrawal limits, or delays that affect how useful the account is for your needs?
Examples show why the headline is not the whole offer
A NerdWallet comparison dated October 8, 2026, listed Peak Bank at 4.27% APY, with $100 to open and no minimum balance to earn the APY. The same comparison described a promotional 5% APY for six months from Axos Bank, followed by a 4.21% standard APY when stated monthly-deposit and balance requirements are met. These are dated examples from an editorial comparison, not live quotes or guarantees that the offers remain available. Confirm current terms with the bank before acting. The practical comparison is not simply 5% versus 4.27%. It is the promotional APY and its duration, the requirements to earn it, the applicable rate afterward, and whether you can meet the terms without changing how you manage your money.

How to compare accounts before opening one
- Find the current disclosure. Use the bank’s official rate sheet and account agreement, and note the date the rate is effective. An editorial roundup can help identify offers, but it is not a substitute for the bank’s current terms.
- Separate the standard rate from any promotion. Write down both APYs and the promotion’s end point. If the post-promotion rate or date is not clear, ask the bank before depositing money.
- Check how the rate applies to your balance. Confirm the minimum to open, the minimum balance to earn the quoted APY, any cap, and whether different portions of your balance earn different rates.
- Verify every eligibility condition. Check required deposits or direct deposits, how often they must occur, and what happens if you miss a requirement.
- Account for fees and access. Consider monthly fees, transfer timing, withdrawal limits, and whether you can get money when you need it. A small rate advantage can be outweighed by fees or inconvenient access.
- Confirm deposit-insurance status and your total balance. Check that the funds are deposits at an FDIC-insured bank and consider other deposits you hold there in the same ownership category.
What FDIC insurance protects
FDIC insurance protects eligible deposits according to its rules; it does not guarantee that an account’s APY will stay high. The standard insurance limit is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. Deposits in the same ownership category at the same bank are added together when coverage is determined. If your total is near or above the limit, review how your accounts are owned and aggregated. - Certificate of deposit (CD): A CD may offer a higher rate in exchange for keeping money deposited for a set term. Review the early-withdrawal terms and choose one only if you can leave the funds committed.
