Is Spirit Airlines still in business or flying?
Spirit announced an immediate orderly wind-down on May 2, 2026. The bankruptcy court later approved the wind-down plan, allowing the company to proceed toward liquidation and asset sales. Do not travel to an airport expecting a Spirit flight to operate.
The Associated Press reported that Spirit carried about 50,000 passengers on its final day of operations. That is a reported figure for May 2, not a measure of ongoing service.
Why did Spirit’s earlier Chapter 11 message say flights would continue?
On March 13, 2026, Spirit announced a restructuring support agreement and plan of reorganization. The company then expected to emerge from Chapter 11 by early summer and told guests they could continue booking and traveling during restructuring. The later May 2 wind-down superseded that assurance: the airline did not emerge as a continuing carrier.

Spirit CEO Dave Davis described the March plan as positioning the airline to continue serving consumers. That statement reflected the plan as announced then, not the eventual outcome. The available reporting does not establish one definitive cause for the shutdown. The Associated Press reported that Spirit attorney Marshall Huebner told the court the airline faced about $100 million in additional fuel expenses in March and April; that is contextual reporting attributed to a court statement, not an audited company statistic or a complete explanation.
What should you do if you had a Spirit reservation?
Do not expect Spirit to rebook you
Spirit’s guest guidance says it cannot rebook passengers on another airline. If you still need to travel, check other carriers directly for a seat on your route, departure timing, and fare. An offer reported during the shutdown period—$200 one-way fares from some airlines for a limited time to travelers showing a Spirit confirmation number and proof of purchase—was time-limited. Its current availability is not established.

Check whether your ticket qualifies for an automatic refund
Spirit says it will automatically process refunds to the original payment method for qualifying flights purchased with a credit or debit card. This guidance is specific to qualifying card-paid tickets; it does not establish the same automatic treatment for vouchers, credits, loyalty balances, or every other payment arrangement. Use the bankruptcy claims process for unresolved amounts
If you believe Spirit still owes you money, follow the official bankruptcy claim instructions and use the claims-agent details Spirit provides: Spirit bankruptcy case and claims information. Filing or having a claim does not guarantee that it will be paid; the amount and timing of any recovery depend on the bankruptcy process.

What the bankruptcy outcome means for travelers
Chapter 11 initially involved a proposed reorganization under which Spirit expected to keep operating. The May 2 announcement and subsequent court-approved wind-down changed the practical answer for passengers: flights stopped, Spirit says it cannot arrange replacement airline bookings, and refund or claim options depend on the type of payment and the applicable case instructions. Check Spirit’s official pages for any updated directions, since liquidation details can change.
