Different PlayStation Store offers for the same game have been reported, but Sony has not publicly confirmed the reported test or explained how offers are assigned. The evidence describes experiments involving different discounts—not proof that Sony is raising a game’s standard price for selected users. It also does not show that purchase history, PS Plus status, income, or another specific account trait determines who sees an offer.
What is the reported PlayStation Store price test?
Price tracker PSPrices says its monitoring detected experiment identifiers in PlayStation Store API offer data, beginning in November 2025. Its March 2026 update described the test growing from 50 games in 30 regions to more than 190 games in over 70 regions, including the United States. PSPrices reported identifiers including IPT_PILOT, IPT_OPR_TESTING, and IPT_LTM, and interpreted the offers as being shown to selected user segments. The observed identifiers and offers are the tracker’s findings; Sony has not explained its selection method. PSPrices’ report

The reported differences concern offer or discount levels. That is narrower than the phrase “dynamic pricing” can suggest: the available evidence does not establish that Sony changed a game’s standard retail price for one user, or that any particular user was charged more than another for the same offer at the same time.
What prices were reported—and what did the early findings get wrong?
PSPrices listed dated examples in its March 2026 report. In Germany, it reported Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and God of War Ragnarök at €69.99 against a stated €79.99 retail price, and HELLDIVERS 2 at €35.74 against €39.99. For the United States, its table listed HELLDIVERS 2 at $28.89 against $39.99 and The Last of Us Part I at $52.89 against $69.99. Those are the tracker’s reported examples, not current-price guarantees or a representative survey of every account.

One correction is important: on March 12, 2026, PSPrices clarified that Grand Theft Auto V for PS5 had a stated $39.99 retail price and that both experimental prices it had discussed—$26.99 and $29.99—were below retail. They were discounts, not a test price increase. PSPrices also reported that during February 2026 sales, some participants received different discount depths; its example was HELLDIVERS 2 at a reported 56% discount for some users versus 25% for regular users. These figures describe the tracker’s dated observations, not a standing discount or a present offer.
Do offers vary by account or PS Plus status?
TechRadar reported on September 9, 2026, that a user saw one price for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor while logged in and a lower offer while logged out. The article also described replies with different amounts; in one instance, US users with and without PS Plus reported the same prices. That anecdotal comparison cannot establish which account characteristics affect offers, or whether the observed difference came from account targeting rather than another factor.

For a meaningful comparison, check the same game edition and platform, country or account region, currency, sale window, and time. Note whether each view is logged in and whether the comparison is between standard retail price and a temporary sale offer. A difference between countries may simply reflect regional pricing; it does not by itself demonstrate different offers within one market.
What Sony has—and has not—said
Sony’s US PlayStation terms do not confirm the reported Store test or identify any price-targeting criteria. Sony’s FY2025 Form 20-F, for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026, says the company aims to maximize average revenue per user on the PlayStation Store and personalize and recommend content. That is general business strategy, not confirmation of personalized game pricing. The same filing reports digital software and add-on content sales in Sony’s Game & Network Services segment of ¥2,415,305 million for FY2026, compared with ¥2,290,498 million for FY2025; these are broad segment figures, not price-test results. Sony separately announced recommended retail price increases for PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal effective April 2, 2026, citing global economic pressures. Those hardware changes are distinct from the reported Store game-offer test and do not verify it. Sony’s hardware price announcement
What should you do if your Store price differs?
- Check the offer on your own account before buying. Sony’s US terms say Store prices, offer terms, availability, and product information may contain errors and may be corrected or updated without prior notice.
- Compare like with like. Confirm the game edition, platform, currency, account region, time, and sale status before concluding that two users saw different offers.
- Do not misstate your residence to seek another offer. Sony’s US terms require a new account to select a country or region and say that choice cannot be changed after creation. Transactions are made with the designated SIE regional company associated with the account’s registered residence. A PlayStation Store Wallet accepts prepaid cards only in the currency of the account’s designated country. PlayStation Network Terms of Service (US)
- Do not assume a later discount entitles you to money back. Under Sony’s US terms, a temporary or permanent price drop after purchase does not itself qualify you for a refund; the purchase must separately meet the Store Cancellation Policy.
What the reports cannot tell you
The reports do not establish the algorithm, who qualifies, how long the experiments ran, or whether the same offer differences continue today. The game and region counts are PSPrices’ reported observations as of its March 2026 update, not an independently audited Sony total. A screenshot or a single logged-in/logged-out comparison cannot show whether a specific account trait caused a price difference.
