Guests still pay for food, utilities, a deposit, travel, and other expenses—and are expected to share their skills with the community. Whether applications are currently being accepted is not established by the published pages.
Is Ollolai really free for digital nomads?
No. The program describes near-free accommodation, not a free trip. Under its published terms, a guest pays €1 for one month’s rent and the municipality covers the house rent. The guest is responsible for other costs, including food, utilities, a deposit, and travel. The page does not set out a total budget, so calculate those expenses separately before deciding whether the stay is affordable. Work From Ollolai’s program page
What does the program expect from participants?
Work From Ollolai is presented as an exchange: it seeks experienced professionals and entrepreneurs, including people in technology, media, finance, real estate, and architecture, as well as artists, writers, musicians, scientists, and academics. Participants may be asked to contribute by giving a public presentation, lecture, or lesson, or by sharing a project and their experience with local people. It is not described as a no-strings tourist giveaway. Work From Ollolai’s program page
How long can you stay, and what is the accommodation?
The program FAQ says the stay is one month maximum “at the moment”; longer requests may be considered case by case. Guests stay in a private house, which could be a one- or two-bedroom apartment depending on group size and availability. The page says a legally binding rental contract is signed with the house owner and clarifies that these are real houses, not hotels or Airbnb properties. Those descriptions do not guarantee a particular house or current availability. Work From Ollolai’s program page

Is the Ollolai offer currently open?
That is not confirmed by the published dates. The Comune di Ollolai’s announcement for “Work from Ollolai” is dated 27 September 2023, and its dataset lists an update on 12 January 2024. The linked program page is accessible and displays an application form, but neither page establishes a current intake or confirms that applications are being accepted in October 2026. Check with the Comune or program operator for current dates, house inventory, and terms before making plans. Comune di Ollolai announcement Work From Ollolai program page
Can you rely on the internet for remote work?
The FAQ says guests can connect through eSIMs on Italian mobile networks and gives an approximate speed of 150 Mb/s. That is the program’s estimate, not an independently tested speed or a guarantee of coverage at every house. Ask about the specific address and your connectivity needs before relying on it for work. The FAQ says a car makes it easier to get around but is not required. Work From Ollolai’s program page

Does staying in Ollolai give you permission to work in Italy?
No. A place in the accommodation program is separate from immigration permission; the program says it cannot provide visa, immigration, or tax recommendations. For non-EU citizens, an Italian government portal describes a digital-nomad or remote-worker route for people performing highly qualified work remotely. It distinguishes self-employed digital nomads from employees working remotely and lists conditions that include qualifying work, lawful income, health insurance valid in Italy, accommodation documentation, and at least six months of relevant previous work. Employee applicants also need an employment contract or binding offer. The portal describes applying through an Italian consulate or embassy abroad and requesting a residence permit within eight working days of arrival. Verify current requirements with the competent consulate before relying on this route. Portale Integrazione Migranti
Official sources give different income figures
The government portal’s 7 June 2024 explainer calculates an income threshold of €24,789 for a worker without a spouse or children under its calculation. An Italian Embassy in Zagreb PDF gives about €28,000. Those figures conflict and should not be treated as a single definitive current threshold. The embassy document also describes alternative ways to demonstrate highly qualified status, including relevant tertiary qualifications or specified professional experience, and says its document list is a guide that may be supplemented. Confirm the applicable amount and evidence directly with the responsible consulate. Portale Integrazione Migranti Embassy of Italy in Zagreb visa requirements PDF
