Is Nvidia’s OpenAI deal really in jeopardy? Jensen Huang publicly dismissed reports of friction and said Nvidia would invest in OpenAI. But that reassurance did not mean Nvidia would invest the originally announced maximum of $100 billion. The 2025 proposal was a letter of intent tied to infrastructure deployment; Reuters later reported a finalized $30 billion investment, and an October 2026 payment update was reported by Cinco Días citing The Information.
What did Jensen Huang say about the OpenAI deal?
In a February 3, 2026 CNBC appearance, Huang rejected reports of controversy and said Nvidia would invest in OpenAI’s next funding round. Network World quoted him on February 5: “No, there’s no controversy at all. It’s complete nonsense.” Reuters had reported on January 31 that Huang planned a “huge” investment, while also quoting him saying it would not be over $100 billion. Those remarks addressed whether Nvidia remained interested in OpenAI—not whether the original infrastructure plan had been finalized on its original scale. Huang’s public support and the deal’s contractual status are separate questions.
What was Nvidia’s original $100 billion proposal?
On September 22, 2025, Nvidia and OpenAI announced a letter of intent for at least 10 gigawatts of Nvidia systems for OpenAI. Nvidia said it intended to invest up to $100 billion progressively as each gigawatt was deployed. The first gigawatt was targeted for the second half of 2026 using Nvidia’s Vera Rubin platform. The announcement said the companies expected to finalize details in the coming weeks; it did not establish that the maximum investment had been made or that the systems had been delivered. The key qualifiers are “letter of intent,” “up to,” and “as each gigawatt was deployed.” The $100 billion was an announced ceiling linked to a proposed infrastructure rollout, not a report of a completed cash transfer.
How did the reported deal change?
| Date | What was reported | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| September 22, 2025 | Nvidia announced a letter of intent for at least 10 gigawatts of systems and an intended investment of up to $100 billion as deployment progressed. The first gigawatt was targeted for the second half of 2026. NVIDIA Newsroom | An announced infrastructure-linked plan and target, not proof of full investment or delivery. |
| January 31, 2026 | Reuters reported Huang expected Nvidia to make a “huge” investment, but not one exceeding $100 billion. Reuters also reported the original agreement was nonbinding and not finalized, citing the Wall Street Journal’s account of people familiar with it. Reuters via Investing.com | Huang reaffirmed investment intent while distinguishing it from the original maximum. |
| February 3, 2026 | Reuters reported Huang said Nvidia would consider investing in OpenAI’s next funding round and eventual IPO. Reuters via Investing.com | Further investment was under consideration. |
| February 25, 2026 | Huang said the companies were close to a partnership agreement; Axios noted the original deal had not yet closed. Axios | “Close” described progress toward an agreement, not a completed agreement. |
| March 4, 2026 | Reuters reported Nvidia finalized a $30 billion investment in OpenAI. Huang said the opportunity to invest $100 billion was probably no longer in the cards as OpenAI prepared to go public. Reuters via Investing.com | The reported finalized investment was distinct from the original up-to-$100-billion infrastructure proposal. |
| October 2, 2026 | Cinco Días, citing The Information, reported Nvidia paid the remaining $10 billion of its $30 billion commitment in OpenAI’s February funding round. Cinco Días | This is secondary reporting attributed to The Information, not a directly confirmed company filing. |
Did Nvidia actually invest $100 billion in OpenAI?
No. The available reporting distinguishes the original maximum intention from the later funding-round investment. Reuters reported that Nvidia finalized $30 billion in March 2026; Cinco Días later reported, citing The Information, that Nvidia paid a remaining $10 billion tranche of its $30 billion February-round commitment. Neither figure supports saying Nvidia completed a $100 billion investment.

Was the infrastructure deployment completed?
Nvidia’s original announcement set a target for the first gigawatt in the second half of 2026. That schedule is a target, not confirmation that deployment occurred. The cited October 2026 payment report concerns funding-round payments and does not establish whether the 10-gigawatt infrastructure rollout—or its first phase—was delivered.

What the headlines leave out
- Reassurance is not the same as final terms. Huang dismissed friction reports and expressed support for investing, while the original letter of intent remained a distinct matter from later funding.
- The two headline numbers describe different things. Up to $100 billion was tied to progressive deployment of infrastructure; $30 billion was later reported as a finalized investment in OpenAI.
- Keep the newest payment detail attributed. The October 2026 report came from Cinco Días citing The Information, rather than a directly confirmed Nvidia filing.
