The available evidence supports the conclusion that Newegg was not derived from Egghead, although it does not include an original founding-era naming record.
Why did Newegg choose its name?
Newegg’s company-authored explanation says its founders selected “Newegg” to signify new hope for e-commerce at a time when e-commerce businesses were struggling to survive. That explanation appears on a Newegg Canada “Our Name” page preserved on a third-party mirror, so it is Newegg’s stated account rather than an independently verified archival naming document. Read the preserved Newegg Canada page.
What did Newegg say about Egghead?
A September 25, 2005 AnandTech forum post reproduced an email signed “William Lazaro” that explicitly denied a connection between NewEgg.com and the old EggHead Software. The statement said the names sounded similar and both companies served computer users. Because the source is a forum reproduction, it does not independently authenticate the email or establish Lazaro’s formal title; it is best treated as a contemporaneous attributed statement, not a verified corporate document. See the 2005 AnandTech discussion.
How do the companies’ timelines compare?
| Company or name | Documented milestone | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Egghead Software | Founded in 1984 | A scholarly history places Egghead’s beginnings well before Newegg’s; it does not establish a relationship between the companies. See “When Good Names Go Bad”. |
| Egghead.com | Egghead Inc. became Egghead.com in January 1998 | This is part of Egghead’s separate naming history, not evidence that Newegg borrowed its name. See the scholarly history. |
| Newegg retail business | Founded in 2001 | Newegg’s company timeline marks its founding in 2001. See Newegg’s 2021 company overview. |
Newegg Commerce, Inc.’s SEC filing also describes the retail business as founded in 2001, while separately explaining that the present reporting registrant was previously Lianluo Smart Limited and changed its name after a merger with Newegg Inc. That later legal-entity history concerns the reporting company’s corporate identity; it does not explain the origin of the Newegg brand name. See Newegg Commerce’s SEC filing.

What can be concluded—and what remains unproven?
- Supported conclusion: Newegg’s own explanation attributes its name to “new hope” for e-commerce, and the 2005 attributed statement says it was not connected to Egghead.
- Historical context: Egghead’s documented founding and name change predate Newegg’s 2001 founding, but chronology alone does not prove or disprove name borrowing.
- Evidence limit: The available material does not include an original founding-era naming memorandum. The conclusion that Newegg was not derived from Egghead rests on Newegg’s stated explanation and the contemporaneous attributed denial, rather than a surviving archival record of the naming decision.
