Re:

Is Motorola Dead? No—but Beating Apple and Samsung Requires More Than a Razr Comeback

Motorola is not dead: Lenovo reports growth and Razr has a strong foldable position. But Motorola remains far behind Apple and Samsung in scale, ecosystem and support—and must win a narrower value-and-design niche.

No. Motorola is still operating under Lenovo, growing its mobile business and selling millions of phones. Lenovo reported record Motorola shipments and double-digit year-over-year mobile revenue growth in the fiscal quarter ending March 31, 2026. In the United States, Motorola held about 10% of smartphone share in Q1 2026, behind Apple at approximately 58% and Samsung at 26%.

That makes Motorola commercially viable, but it does not make it an Apple or Samsung peer. Its realistic opportunity is narrower: become the best-designed, best-supported value and foldable alternative in Android, rather than trying to match Apple’s ecosystem or Samsung’s global breadth.

What “Motorola dead” means in 2026

Four different questions are often mixed together:

  • Is Motorola legally or operationally gone? No. Motorola Mobility continues as Lenovo’s smartphone business.
  • Is it still the feature-phone giant it was in the 2000s? No. That scale and market leadership are gone.
  • Is the consumer brand dead? No. Motorola remains widely recognized, particularly in the United States and Latin America.
  • Is it already a premium rival to Apple and Samsung? No. It sells premium and foldable phones, but has not matched their ecosystem depth, scale or customer loyalty.

The historic Razr era and today’s Lenovo-owned Motorola are different corporate periods. Google completed its sale of Motorola Mobility to Lenovo in 2014. Motorola is now a Lenovo brand, not an independent public smartphone company.

Who owns Motorola, and why that matters

Lenovo supplies manufacturing scale, distribution, supply-chain expertise, PC relationships and access to a broader device portfolio. The company’s strategy spans PCs, tablets, smartphones, accessories, software and services, including its “Hybrid AI” initiatives (Lenovo’s fiscal 2025/26 results).

That ownership is both an advantage and a limitation. Lenovo can fund products and place them through global channels, but Motorola is one business inside a larger portfolio. Apple gives the iPhone singular strategic priority; Lenovo does not disclose a standalone Motorola profit figure in the cited results.

Is Motorola growing or shrinking?

The answer depends on the measurement. Lenovo’s figures show growth, while independent market-share data show that Motorola remains much smaller than the two leaders.

Measure What it shows Qualification
Lenovo fiscal Q4 ending March 31, 2026 Record Motorola shipments and double-digit year-over-year mobile revenue growth Company-reported; no standalone Motorola profit disclosed (Lenovo)
Lenovo Q1 FY2025/26 Mobile revenue above $2.2 billion, up more than 14% year over year; smartphone volume outgrew the market for eight consecutive quarters Company-reported Lenovo smartphone business, primarily Motorola outside China (Lenovo)
US Q1 2026 Apple approximately 58%, Samsung 26%, Motorola 10% Counterpoint shipment-share data; geography and methodology matter (Counterpoint)
Global Q1 2026 Samsung 21.2% and Apple 21.0% of shipments; Lenovo was outside IDC’s top five IDC company-level shipment share (IDC)

These figures are not interchangeable: Lenovo reports its own revenue and shipments, while IDC and Counterpoint estimate market shipments using their respective methodologies. Motorola can grow from a small base while Apple and Samsung remain far larger.

Why Apple is so difficult to beat

Apple sells more than a handset. The iPhone is the center of a tightly integrated system of iCloud, Apple Watch, AirPods, iPad, Mac, AppleCare, retail support and subscription services.

  • Long-term software support with predictable delivery.
  • High resale values, trade-in programs and strong upgrade habits.
  • Consistent carrier and retail availability.
  • Services revenue that increases the value of each active iPhone.
  • A premium brand that reduces dependence on discounts.

Motorola usually competes on the individual phone: its price, battery, design, display and specifications. That can be attractive, but it does not create the same switching costs. Motorola should not copy Apple’s closed system. Its better route is excellent Android interoperability, dependable Windows integration and useful cross-device features.

Why Samsung is difficult to beat

Samsung covers nearly every Android price point, from Galaxy A models to Galaxy S flagships and Galaxy Z foldables. It also benefits from display, memory, semiconductor and camera-component expertise, extensive carrier relationships and a broad ecosystem of watches, tablets, laptops, televisions and appliances.

IDC’s Q1 2026 data put Samsung first globally at 21.2% of shipments, narrowly ahead of Apple at 21.0% (IDC). Samsung’s newer Galaxy devices also make long support commitments a visible selling point.

Motorola does not need Samsung’s entire portfolio. It can compete by being simpler, more design-led and more affordable in selected categories, provided it makes model names, availability and support policies easier to understand.

Is Razr Motorola’s comeback vehicle?

Razr is Motorola’s clearest strategic opening, but it is not a complete turnaround by itself.

Why Razr helps

  • The name carries unusual recognition from the earlier flip-phone era.
  • A flip foldable is visually distinctive and easier to explain than small differences between slab phones.
  • Color, materials and industrial design give Motorola alternatives to processor and camera specification battles.
  • Lenovo said Motorola held more than 50% of the foldable market outside China in Q1 FY2025/26 (Lenovo).
  • Counterpoint describes Motorola’s 2026 direction as more fashion- and lifestyle-oriented, with reported international launch prices rising to $799 for the entry Razr versus $699 for the prior year’s equivalent and $1,499 for the Razr 70 Ultra versus $1,299 previously. Those figures use international model names and launch contexts, so they should not be treated as current US prices (Counterpoint).

Why Razr is not enough

  • Foldables remain a smaller category than conventional phones.
  • Samsung has deeper foldable experience and stronger premium credibility.
  • Higher prices can undermine Motorola’s traditional value proposition.
  • Fashion cannot compensate for weak cameras, battery life, durability, repair access or software support.
  • A future Apple foldable could expand awareness while making the category harder to win.

Razr proves Motorola can make a differentiated product. It does not prove that Motorola has solved its entire smartphone business.

Can Motorola still win on value?

Yes, but low prices alone are becoming less sustainable. IDC reported that global smartphone shipments fell 2.9% year over year to 293.8 million units in Q1 2026 and forecast a 13.9% decline for full-year 2026. IDC also cited memory shortages and component costs as reasons manufacturers may raise prices, reduce shipments and prioritize higher-priced models (IDC).

Low-end phones generate volume but thin margins. Premium phones require expensive cameras, processors, displays, software and marketing. Raising prices risks losing value-conscious buyers; keeping prices low without meaningful differentiation turns Motorola into a commodity.

The answer is value engineering:

  • Fewer, clearer models.
  • Better cameras and video in the midrange.
  • Longer, explicitly published update commitments.
  • Durable construction, fast charging and strong battery life.
  • Useful AI features instead of generic AI labels.
  • Consistent design and support across Moto G, Edge and Razr families.

Software support is Motorola’s highest-leverage weakness

There is no single universal Motorola update policy. Android-version upgrades, security-support duration, delivery speed and even eligibility can vary by model, country, carrier and release date. Buyers should verify the exact phone’s official support page before purchasing.

Motorola can make support a strategic advantage by publishing, for every model:

  • The security-update end date and expected frequency.

  • Whether the promise applies to the entire lineup or only selected premium devices.

Apple and Samsung have taught buyers to treat support as part of a phone’s value. Clear promises, timely delivery and several years of dependable ownership would distinguish Motorola without requiring Apple’s component scale.

Can Lenovo build a real ecosystem?

Lenovo gives Motorola a credible starting point: laptops, tablets, monitors, accessories, enterprise relationships and AI-PC initiatives. In theory, a Motorola phone could share files, notifications, calls and productivity workflows with a Lenovo PC.

Ownership alone does not create ecosystem lock-in. To influence a purchase, Lenovo-Motorola continuity must have shared accounts, reliable software, common accessories, broad Windows and Android compatibility, consistent regional availability and enough everyday utility to matter. For now, this is potential leverage rather than an Apple- or Galaxy-level consumer ecosystem.

What Motorola does well today

  • Distinctive design: especially in Razr and selected Edge models.
  • Value: competitive hardware at lower prices than many equivalent iPhones and Galaxies.
  • Battery and charging: frequent strengths in the value and midrange ranges.
  • Clean Android: a simpler interface than Samsung’s more feature-heavy software, though preference varies.
  • Carrier presence: meaningful availability in the United States and strong recognition in Latin America.
  • Flexibility: as a smaller challenger, Motorola can focus on niches rather than reproduce Samsung’s entire catalog.

What still holds Motorola back

  • Premium identity is inconsistent across Edge and Razr generations.
  • Camera and video performance often matter more to buyers than specifications suggest.
  • Software support and update timing require model-by-model verification.
  • Product names and regional availability can be confusing.
  • Discounts can make growth less durable and weaken brand pricing power.
  • Motorola has not publicly established standalone profitability in the cited Lenovo releases.
  • Its ecosystem is less mature than Apple’s or Samsung’s.

The strategy that could work

1. Make support a headline feature

Publish simple, model-specific commitments and meet them across regions and carriers. Support should appear beside battery, camera and display specifications, not in obscure legal pages.

2. Own practical foldables

Use Razr to lead on hinge durability, crease management, water resistance, repairability, battery life and useful cover-screen software—not just colors and fashion partnerships.

3. Simplify the lineup

Buyers should immediately understand the difference between Moto G, Edge and Razr, which model fits their budget and how long it will be supported.

4. Turn Lenovo continuity into a reason to switch

Make phone-to-PC calling, file transfer, notifications and device setup reliable, fast and available across ordinary Lenovo hardware—not only showcase products.

  • All-day battery life**. Go a full day and night with a 4200mAh battery, fuel up fast with TurboPower 30W charging, and charge wirelessly.**

5. Compete on complete value

Judge a phone over three to five years: purchase price, updates, repairability, battery longevity, camera quality, resale value and carrier compatibility. The cheapest launch price is not necessarily the lowest ownership cost.

How to decide whether Motorola is right for you

Motorola is a good fit when you value

  • Lower upfront cost than an equivalent iPhone or Galaxy.
  • Clean Android software.
  • Battery life and fast charging.
  • Distinctive design or the Razr form factor.
  • Compatibility with Android and Windows.
  • A capable phone rather than the absolute best camera or processor.

Look elsewhere when you need

  • The most reliable computational photography and video.
  • The longest, most predictable support program.
  • Maximum resale value.
  • A mature watch, tablet and laptop ecosystem.
  • Every carrier feature immediately and consistently.
  • The strongest flagship performance.

What success would look like

Motorola’s comeback should be judged over several upgrade cycles, not by one Razr launch. The meaningful signals are:

  1. US share grows without constant discounting.
  2. Razr remains competitive after Apple enters foldables.
  3. Edge becomes a credible premium alternative.
  4. Update promises are clear, comparable and fulfilled.
  5. Camera and video reviews improve materially.
  6. Lenovo-PC features become useful enough to influence purchases.
  7. Growth continues across multiple product generations, not only one quarter.

Verdict: alive, but not an Apple or Samsung peer

Motorola is not dead. It is a functioning Lenovo smartphone business with recent shipment and revenue growth, a meaningful US position and a particularly strong foldable foothold outside China.

It is also not restored to its old dominance, and it is nowhere near Apple or Samsung in global scale, premium power, ecosystem depth, software consistency or profitability visibility. The realistic winning position is selective competition: affordable and midrange Android phones, well-executed Razr foldables, distinctive design, dependable long-term support and useful Lenovo cross-device integration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Motorola still making phones in 2026?

Yes. Motorola Mobility operates under Lenovo, and Lenovo reported record Motorola shipments and double-digit year-over-year mobile revenue growth in the fiscal quarter ending March 31, 2026.

Is Motorola better than Apple or Samsung?

There is no universal winner. Motorola can be better for price, battery, clean Android software and Razr design; Apple and Samsung are generally stronger for ecosystem depth, support visibility, resale value and premium-camera consistency.

Does Motorola have the best foldable phones?

Motorola has a strong foldable position, particularly outside China, but leadership varies by country, quarter, model and measurement. Razr is a differentiated product, not proof of overall smartphone leadership.
