Contentstack acquired Portland, Oregon-based customer data platform (CDP) startup Lytics in a transaction that closed in December 2024 and was announced on January 8, 2025. The financial terms were not disclosed. The deal brought Lytics’ real-time customer-data, identity, audience and activation capabilities into Contentstack’s headless-CMS and composable digital-experience platform strategy.
Contentstack has since incorporated Lytics technology into products including Data and Insights, Data Cloud and broader adaptive-experience offerings. The result is a software strategy that connects structured content with first-party customer data, rather than treating a CMS and CDP as separate systems.
What exactly happened?
| Item | Verified detail |
|---|---|
| Buyer | Contentstack, headquartered in Austin, Texas |
| Target | Lytics, a Portland, Oregon-based CDP company |
| Deal closed | December 2024 |
| Public announcement | January 8, 2025 |
| Financial terms | Not publicly disclosed |
| Post-deal status | Contentstack presents Lytics as “a Contentstack company” |
Contentstack’s announcement says the acquisition had already closed in December 2024, so describing it simply as a 2025 acquisition misses an important timing distinction. Public announcements do not establish whether the transaction was structured as an asset purchase, stock purchase or merger, nor do they establish whether Lytics remains a separately incorporated company.
Contentstack described the rationale as adding data to its composable digital-experience strategy. Its acquisition announcement is available at Contentstack’s announcement; TechTarget also reported that the financial terms were undisclosed at TechTarget.

What Lytics brought to Contentstack
Lytics was not merely an analytics dashboard. It positioned itself as an “Experience CDP”: software for collecting engagement data, resolving identities, building profiles and audiences, scoring behavior and activating those audiences in downstream channels.
Core capabilities
- Unified customer and audience profiles.
- Real-time engagement and behavioral data.
- Known- and unknown-visitor analysis.
- Audience segmentation and predictive insights.
- Identity resolution and profile management.
- Activation to customer-selected destinations.
Contentstack’s current Lytics product page describes SDKs, APIs, JavaScript tagging, monitoring, alerting, identity mapping, profile management and audience-schema controls. That capability set supplied functions a headless CMS does not provide on its own.
Why a headless CMS wanted a CDP
A headless CMS stores and delivers structured content through APIs. It does not, by itself, know which visitor is returning, what that visitor recently did or which audience rules should determine the next experience. The product logic behind the acquisition is a chain:
Rank #2
- Perfect quality CD digital audio extraction (ripping)
- Fastest CD Ripper available
- Extract audio from CDs to wav or Mp3
- Extract many other file formats including wma, m4q, aac, aiff, cda and more
- Extract many other file formats including wma, m4q, aac, aiff, cda and more
- Content: Contentstack manages structured content and digital assets.
- Context: Lytics supplies identity, behavioral and engagement signals.
- Decision: Audience rules or personalization logic select an experience.
- Activation: Data and content are delivered through chosen channels.
- Measurement: Engagement and content performance can be analyzed.
Contentstack said this combination would support personalization for both known and unknown visitors and help brands use first-party data in digital experiences. Those are the company’s product and strategy claims, not independent proof that every implementation will improve conversion or revenue.
What changed after the closing?
The acquisition was followed by product integration rather than an announcement that Lytics would remain an entirely separate offering. On June 4, 2025, Contentstack announced that Lytics capabilities had been integrated into its EDGE platform as “Data and Insights.” The announcement described native audience analytics, real-time data activation and omnichannel campaign orchestration.
By 2026, Contentstack’s public positioning had broadened to terms such as Data Cloud, Content Cloud, Agent OS and Agentic Experience Platform. Its Data Cloud materials describe warehouse-connected data, identity resolution, behavioral streaming and personalization. The Lytics page continues to present the acquired technology within Contentstack’s data and personalization stack.

The integration milestone does not establish that every capability is included in every plan or that every customer receives a turnkey implementation. Availability, packaging, integrations and implementation effort must be confirmed contractually.
Portland startup, team and customer context
Lytics was founded in 2013 by James McDermott and Aaron Raddon, according to Contentstack. GeekWire reported that Lytics had 26 employees and that all would join Contentstack. McDermott became Contentstack’s Global Head of Data Products.

Contentstack’s announcement associated Lytics with Kraft Heinz, Mondelez, Glassdoor, Universal Music Group, Live Nation, Clorox and Ancestry. Those names should not automatically be treated as customers of the combined platform. Portland context is available in GeekWire’s coverage.
What the deal means for the CDP and DXP markets
The transaction reflects convergence among headless CMS vendors, CDPs, personalization engines, analytics platforms and marketing activation tools. TechTarget placed it in a broader pattern of CDP acquisitions and noted competition with DXP vendors such as Optimizely, Sitecore and Kentico.
Integrated suite versus best of breed
| Approach | Potential benefit | Potential cost or risk |
|---|---|---|
| Integrated Contentstack stack | Fewer vendors and tighter links between content, audience data and activation | More vendor concentration and possible gaps versus specialized products |
| Best-of-breed architecture | Freedom to select separate CMS, CDP, analytics and decisioning tools | More integrations, operational ownership and failure points |
| Warehouse-centered model | Existing data platform remains the analytical system of record while activation tools use governed data | Additional identity, latency, governance and engineering work |
Contentstack’s current materials describe Lytics as working with warehouses, CDPs and other data sources. The acquisition therefore does not establish that Contentstack replaces Salesforce, Segment, Adobe or every existing data platform. Depending on architecture and plan, the product may act as an operational activation layer, a profile and identity service, a warehouse-connected personalization layer or a combination of those roles.

What prospective customers should evaluate
Organizations considering the combined platform should separate announced capability from generally available functionality and from work that requires configuration, integration or professional services.
- Existing CMS: Determine whether Contentstack is already deployed or whether a CMS migration is justified.
- CDP scope: Confirm real-time identity, anonymous-visitor handling, profile unification, segmentation, warehouse connectivity and destinations.
- Implementation: Budget for data mapping, identity rules, SDK or tag deployment, destination setup and governance.
- Performance: Test decisioning latency and its effect on page performance and Core Web Vitals.
- Portability: Confirm export of profiles, events, segments, schemas and activation logic before signing.
- Commercial model: Ask whether charges are based on profiles, events, traffic, destinations, data volume, seats or enterprise minimums. Public acquisition materials do not publish enterprise pricing.
Privacy and anonymous visitors
Anonymous personalization does not mean identifying a person without an appropriate identifier or consent basis. Behavioral signals can support contextual or cohort-level decisions, while personally identifiable information requires appropriate legal and technical controls.
Contentstack’s privacy documentation says customers remain data controllers and control which PII sources and destinations are used with Lytics. It also says Lytics does not sell PII or supplement customer PII with third-party data except through customer-directed integrations. Those statements do not replace legal review of consent, retention, deletion, security or jurisdictional requirements.
Questions to ask before buying or renewing
- Which Lytics functions are included in the current Contentstack package?
- Is the original Lytics product still sold independently, and what happens to existing contracts and SLAs?
- Are historical profiles, events, segments and integrations preserved?
- Which integrations are native and which require custom engineering?
- How are anonymous IDs mapped to known profiles?
- What are the limits for events, profiles, retention, destinations and API calls?
- Can another CDP operate alongside Contentstack?
- Which capabilities are generally available, beta or roadmap?
- How are deletion, suppression and data-subject requests handled?
- Can marketing teams operate the system without continuing engineering support?
Bottom line for CDP and DXP buyers
Contentstack’s purchase of Lytics was a completed December 2024 transaction announced on January 8, 2025, with undisclosed terms. Its strategic importance is the move from headless CMS toward a broader experience platform that links content with real-time customer data and activation.

Buyers should still validate packaging, migration obligations, data portability, privacy controls, latency and independent business results rather than assuming that “native” integration eliminates implementation work or makes a separate CDP unnecessary.
