Neither upgrade is automatically better: choose RAM when memory pressure is slowing the work you do, and choose an SSD when the computer still runs from a hard disk and drive access is the bottleneck. Check what is actually limiting the PC before spending money; an upgrade cannot fix every cause of sluggish performance.
How to tell which upgrade addresses the slowdown
Start by checking the computer while doing the task that feels slow. Microsoft lists consistently high Memory or Disk use as signs worth investigating, but a high reading is a clue rather than proof that a component needs replacing. Look at which app or process is using the resource and whether the pattern persists during ordinary use. Microsoft’s guide to knowing when it may be time for a new PC also points to slow startup, longer task times, and consistently high CPU, Memory, or Disk use.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Select Processes and note CPU, Memory, and Disk use while reproducing the slowdown.
- Repeat the check during the kinds of work you normally do. A single brief spike does not establish a persistent bottleneck.
- Check whether the system drive is a hard disk drive (HDD) or already a solid-state drive (SSD), then confirm what upgrades your exact PC supports.
Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance notes that background and startup apps, outdated software, low storage, and hardware limits can all contribute to poor performance. A slow PC is not, by itself, a diagnosis.
When adding RAM is the better choice
RAM is the working memory apps and files use while active. If Memory use is regularly high during your normal workload, and the PC supports a memory upgrade, adding RAM may help it handle more tasks at once without slowing down. It is especially relevant when the slowdown appears during multitasking or when several memory-intensive programs are open.
#1 Best Overall
- Upgrade your laptop or desktop computer and feel the difference with super-fast OS boot times and application loads
- Exceptional performance offering up to 550MB/s seq. Read and 500MB/s seq. Write speeds
- Superior performance as compared to traditional hard drives (HDD)
- Ultra-low power consumption
- Backwards compatible with SATA II 3GB/sec
Microsoft’s general memory guidance suggests at least 4 GB for light browsing, documents, or streaming; recommends 8 GB for longer-term use; and says 16 GB or more may suit editing or demanding projects. These broad recommendations are not test results or a promise that a particular older PC will become faster. The right capacity depends on the computer and what you run.
Before buying, check the computer’s model, memory type, maximum supported capacity, and whether its RAM is replaceable. Some laptops have memory that cannot be upgraded. Kingston provides a model lookup, but the exact computer still needs to be checked.

When replacing an HDD with an SSD is the better choice
If the PC’s system drive is a spinning HDD, replacing it with an SSD targets drive access: opening programs and files may feel more responsive when storage access is the constraint. Kingston describes replacing a traditional hard disk with an SSD as an upgrade option in its PC performance guidance. This is a different fix from adding RAM. If the computer already has an SSD, replacing it should not be assumed to help without identifying another problem.
Check the exact drive interface and form factor before choosing a replacement—for example, SATA versus M.2/NVMe. These are not interchangeable in every PC. If migrating the existing system to a new drive, back up important files first and confirm that the replacement is compatible with the computer.

Check storage space and other causes before buying
Low free space and slow drive access are separate issues. If the drive is nearly full, freeing space may help without replacing it. Microsoft’s Windows storage guidance describes Storage Sense and cleanup recommendations. Cleanup addresses capacity; it does not turn an HDD into an SSD or resolve memory pressure.
- High Memory use: identify the apps responsible and assess whether compatible additional RAM would address the workload.
- High Disk use: determine whether the system drive is an HDD, whether another process is causing activity, and whether free space is low.
- High CPU use: investigate the process or workload; neither RAM nor an SSD is a general CPU upgrade.
- Slow startup or background activity: review startup apps and software state before attributing the problem to a component.
Check whether the older PC is worth upgrading
Compatibility and the computer’s broader limits matter. Verify the supported RAM and drive for the exact model, as well as whether the operating system remains suitable. Microsoft’s Windows 11 compatibility guidance includes requirements beyond RAM and storage, including a compatible processor and TPM 2.0. Replacing a drive or adding memory alone does not establish Windows 11 eligibility. Older hardware may also limit the benefit of software troubleshooting or an individual component upgrade.

Make the choice from the evidence
| What you find | Upgrade to investigate | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Memory use stays high during your usual work, and the PC supports more RAM | RAM | Targets a shortage of working memory and multitasking pressure. |
| The system drive is an HDD and drive access is the slowdown | SSD | Targets the slower access of a spinning system disk. |
| The drive is nearly full, but there is no evidence that access speed is the issue | Cleanup first | Freeing space may address capacity without replacing the drive. |
| The system already has an SSD, or CPU use or software appears to be the constraint | Diagnose further | Neither proposed upgrade is established as the fix. |
Microsoft’s memory and Windows guidance and Kingston’s upgrade advice support these conditional choices; neither establishes a universal speedup percentage or a head-to-head winner for older PCs. Kingston calls both an SSD and more memory potential upgrade options, but that is vendor guidance, not independent comparative testing.
