The sale later went to Arise Capital Partners, which completed its acquisition on 2 May 2026. Ashley did not buy the club.
What was Mike Ashley’s position after Bord withdrew?
On 26 February 2026, Sky Sports reported that Ashley’s representatives were in contact with Sheffield Wednesday’s administrators and that he had a clear interest in the club. His initial price was below some rival offers, and Sky said it was unclear whether he would raise it. The report described a live possibility at that point, not an agreed takeover.
That snapshot was overtaken by the eventual sale. BBC Sport reported on 2 May 2026 that Arise Capital Partners had completed its acquisition of Wednesday.
Why did James Bord’s consortium pull out?
Bord’s group had been selected as preferred bidder in December 2025, subject to the EFL Owners’ and Directors’ Test. In February, the consortium withdrew, saying the agreed figure was too high in light of due diligence. Its spokesperson said: “Our initial bid had constraints applied on our ability to renegotiate – which is crucial as the figure we offered is significantly higher than that justified by the findings of a lengthy due diligence process.” Sky Sports reported the withdrawal and Ashley’s contact with administrators; The Guardian reported that an additional PricewaterhouseCoopers due-diligence report preceded the decision.

Why do reports give different figures for Bord’s bid?
The figures are attributed reports, not a single settled price. Sky Sports said administrators valued the preferred-bidder proposal at £47.8 million. The Guardian reported the consortium’s bid as around £40 million and also described £32.5 million as an earlier reported figure. The available accounts do not establish that these figures measure the same components or valuation basis, so they should not be treated as directly interchangeable.

After Bord’s withdrawal, the process moved to Arise Capital Partners. BBC Sport reported on 11 March 2026 that administrators had entered exclusive negotiations with Arise, then reported completion on 2 May. The stages matter: Bord had been preferred bidder, Arise later entered exclusive negotiations and ultimately completed the acquisition. The reporting does not establish that the highest bid alone determined the result; due diligence, creditor considerations and EFL procedures were also part of the process.

BBC Sport reported that former owner Dejphon Chansiri was understood to have loaned the club £60 million over more than a decade. In March, it also reported a £15 million creditor repayment requirement linked to avoiding a then-anticipated points consequence under EFL rules. That was a conditional report, not the final outcome: after the acquisition, BBC reported that the EFL waived the planned deduction. The £60 million figure describes reported historical lending, not a valuation of Ashley’s offer.
The administrators said: “Our focus remains unchanged – to secure a responsible sale of the club, protect its future and achieve the best possible outcome for creditors.” The completed sale to Arise, rather than Ashley’s February contact, is the decisive outcome for readers asking who bought Wednesday.
