No confirmed bid from Mike Ashley has been reported. A November 2025 article by The72, attributing its information to journalist Alan Nixon, said Ashley was monitoring developments around a possible Derby County takeover. That is a report of interest, not evidence of an offer or a deal. The £60 million valuation mentioned in the article was not confirmed by Derby County.
The separate, later takeover story involved Turki Alalshikh’s Lion Sport. Derby said in August 2026 that those discussions would not proceed, and owner David Clowes later said the club had been taken off the market.
What was reported about Mike Ashley?
On 30 November 2025, The72’s James Ray reported that journalist Alan Nixon had said on Patreon that Ashley was keeping an eye on developments at Pride Park. The72 described the potential valuation as £60 million and characterized a takeover by Ashley as a surprise. The underlying Patreon wording is not directly verifiable from the available report, so the claim should be treated as The72’s account of Nixon’s reporting, not as a direct quote from Nixon or Ashley. The72’s report
Nothing in that report establishes that Ashley submitted a bid, entered negotiations, or agreed to buy the club. Nor does the £60 million figure establish an official asking price: it was a valuation reported by The72, not a price confirmed by Derby County.

Did Ashley bid for Derby County?
The available reporting does not establish that he did. “Monitoring” developments is not the same as making an offer or beginning formal negotiations. Derby’s June 2026 Supporters’ Board notes said multiple interested parties were in conversation, but the club said it would not confirm or deny individual links publicly before the relevant Independent Football Regulator, EFL and legal processes allowed an announcement. Those notes did not name Ashley. Derby County Supporters’ Board notes, June 2026
What happened to the separate Lion Sport takeover?
In August 2026, Derby’s proposed sale of a controlling interest to Turki Alalshikh’s Lion Sport did not proceed. The BBC reported on 10 August that Alalshikh had abandoned the proposed takeover and that the deal had been sanctioned by the EFL and Independent Football Regulator. Derby’s statement said: “For the benefit of any doubt, the club is now off the market.” BBC Sport’s report, 10 August 2026

Clowes gave his account to supporters on 22 August. He wrote: “We started the day expecting completion of a takeover and ended it stunned, in a daze and pondering steps we didn’t expect to have to take.” He also said: “I’m not wasting any more time on what might have been, hence why we have taken the club off the market.” Clowes said Derby would continue with support from Clowes Developments. The Lion Sport transaction was separate from the November 2025 report about Ashley. The available accounts do not indicate that Ashley was involved in the Lion Sport deal.

Who owns Derby County now?
Derby County’s published ownership information identifies Clowes Developments (UK) Ltd as the owner. The club’s 2025 accounts describe the club and stadium as separate legal entities beneath Derby County (The Rams) Holdings Limited, which is wholly owned by Clowes Developments. The reports describe different stages and different transactions. A monitoring report is not a bid; multiple parties being in conversation does not identify a buyer; and an abandoned, regulator-reviewed proposal is not a completed sale. The clearest later statement on whether Derby was available came from Clowes in August 2026: he said the club was off the market.
