There is no verified Microsoft offer showing Visual Studio Professional 2026 at $42.50. Microsoft’s published pricing shows a $499 one-time standalone license, a $45 per-user monthly subscription, and a Professional standard subscription displayed at $99.99 per user per month when paid annually. Treat a “$42.50 Spring Sale” headline as unverified unless it links to an active Microsoft or authorized-partner checkout page with clear dates and terms.
Microsoft’s official pricing page is visualstudio.microsoft.com/vs/pricing. The Microsoft Store collection also lists Visual Studio Professional 2026 at $499: Microsoft Store.
What the $42.50 claim could mean
The official Microsoft pages located for this article do not show $42.50 for Visual Studio Professional 2026. The number could instead refer to:
- An expired spring promotion. A spring 2026 offer would need specific start and end dates; it should not be presented as active on August 18, 2026 without evidence.
- A monthly-equivalent figure based on an annual payment. Check the amount charged at checkout, not only the advertised monthly number.
- A renewal price available only to an existing subscriber. Microsoft’s renewal discounts have eligibility and timing requirements: renewal guidance.
- Education, nonprofit, regional, or other restricted pricing, possibly before tax.
- A third-party key, which may be region-locked, volume-license restricted, previously redeemed, invalid, or later revoked.
- A different product such as Visual Studio Community, Visual Studio Code, an extension, a trial, an upgrade, or Azure DevOps.
Do not enter payment details until the seller identifies the exact product, license type, country, currency, taxes, billing interval, renewal terms, and eligibility requirements.

Prices, taxes, currencies, and availability vary by market and channel. Microsoft’s downloads page captured Visual Studio Professional 2026 as version 18.8.0; verify the current version before buying: official downloads.
What the $499 standalone license includes
The standalone edition is a one-time license for the current Visual Studio Professional 2026 IDE. It provides the professional Windows development environment for workloads including .NET and C++. Microsoft describes Professional as aimed at individual developers and small teams.
Rank #2
“Perpetual” means continued rights to use the licensed version under Microsoft’s terms. It does not promise every future Visual Studio release, nor does it automatically include subscription benefits such as Azure credits, subscriber software downloads, training, support incidents, or Azure DevOps services. Microsoft’s licensing guidance is available at microsoft.com/licensing/guidance/Visual-Studio.
What a Professional subscription adds
A Professional standard subscription includes Visual Studio Professional and, depending on the plan and purchase channel, benefits such as Azure DevOps Basic, basic development and testing software, training and support, and a $50 monthly Azure credit for eligible development and testing use. Microsoft’s Store description lists access to the latest Visual Studio version, Azure credits, Azure DevOps Services, and subscriber downloads: subscription listing.

- Azure credits are not cash, are not intended for production applications under the cited benefit rules, and cannot be pooled across subscriptions.
- Benefits vary by subscription type, channel, country, and Microsoft policy.
- Subscriptions are generally licensed per user, not per installation. Installing Visual Studio on several computers does not let several people share one user license.
Microsoft Learn says new annual Visual Studio Professional and Enterprise cloud subscriptions are no longer offered through that cloud-subscription route. New monthly cloud subscriptions remain available, while existing customers may have renewal options under applicable rules: subscription types.
Which option fits your situation?
Standalone Professional
Choose the $499 edition if you want a one-time purchase, primarily need the IDE, and do not need subscription-linked credits, downloads, training, or support. You avoid recurring billing but should not assume entitlement to future major versions.
Rank #4
Monthly Professional
The $45 monthly plan suits a temporary project, freelance engagement, or buyer who prefers a smaller initial payment. It is recurring, and Marketplace billing requires an Azure subscription.
Standard subscription
The standard plan makes sense when Azure credits, Azure DevOps, software downloads, training, and support justify the annual commitment. Compare the initial annual payment with the separately listed renewal rate; neither figure proves that a new customer qualifies for $42.50.
Best Value
Community
Community may be enough for an individual, student, educator, open-source contributor, or qualifying small team. Microsoft describes free use for individuals, classrooms, open-source projects, and non-enterprise teams of up to five developers, subject to its license terms: Community conditions.
Visual Studio Code
Code is the better fit for a lightweight, extension-based workflow or macOS and Linux development. It is a source-code editor, not the full Windows Visual Studio IDE and not a substitute for Professional subscription benefits. See Microsoft’s comparison page at Visual Studio pricing and free tools.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to verify and buy safely
- Start at Microsoft’s Visual Studio pricing page or the Microsoft Store, rather than an advertisement.
- Confirm the exact product name: “Visual Studio Professional 2026,” “Professional monthly,” or another clearly identified plan.
- Identify whether checkout is for a standalone license, monthly subscription, annual payment, renewal, upgrade, education offer, or trial.
- Check the total charged, billing frequency, tax treatment, country, currency, automatic-renewal date, and cancellation terms.
- Verify eligibility and the seller. Microsoft identifies the Microsoft Store, Visual Studio Marketplace, cloud-solution providers, and volume licensing as channels depending on product and customer type.
- Save the invoice, order confirmation, account association, and any product-key information.
- For a subscription, activate it from the confirmation page or email, associate it with the intended Microsoft or work account, and confirm it appears in the Visual Studio Subscriptions portal. Activation is required for benefits such as downloads and Azure credits.
If an unfamiliar seller advertises $42.50, ask whether the key is retail, subscription, volume, academic, upgrade-only, OEM, or region-specific, and demand a clear refund policy. If the listing claims to be an official Microsoft sale but cannot be found through Microsoft’s storefront, contact Microsoft Store support instead of paying.
Bottom line on the Spring Sale price
The verified official signals are $499 one time for the standalone Professional 2026 IDE and $45 per month for the monthly Professional subscription. A $42.50 “Spring Sale” price is not established by Microsoft’s published pages. Buy it only if an official or demonstrably authorized offer supplies valid dates, eligibility, billing details, and a supported license; otherwise consider the confirmed prices or the free Community edition if your use qualifies.
