Short answer: Continued DRAM tightness through 2027 is a credible forecast, particularly for HBM and server memory used in AI infrastructure. But “prices will climb another 30%” is not a universal prediction for every RAM stick, laptop, phone or region. The figure reported in January 2026 described a prior market-period increase, while later forecasts show sharply different moves by product and quarter.
What the original 30% claim actually said
The headline traces to a January 27, 2026 PC Guide report citing Yole Group. It said DRAM prices had risen by more than 30% during the fourth quarter of 2025 and that shortages could persist until 2027. That is a historical, quarter-specific movement—not proof that every consumer module would rise another 30% after publication.
“Price” also needs a market layer. A contract price is negotiated between a supplier and a large buyer; a spot price covers near-term transactions; a module price covers a finished DIMM or SO-DIMM; and a retail price includes distribution, margins, promotions, exchange rates and local demand. A contract forecast therefore does not translate one-for-one into a particular 32GB kit.
Which memory is tight?
| Product | Role | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| HBM | Stacked, high-bandwidth DRAM paired with AI accelerators | Uses DRAM dies plus specialized bonding, packaging and testing capacity. |
| Server DRAM/RDIMM | Large-capacity memory for servers | AI systems need substantial conventional memory in addition to HBM. |
| DDR4 and DDR5 | Desktop and server system memory | Supply and end-of-life conditions differ by generation. |
| LPDDR | Low-power memory in phones and thin laptops | Can face spillover from the same allocation decisions. |
| NAND flash | Storage in SSDs and phones | It is a separate market; TrendForce describes a looser NAND outlook than DRAM. |
TrendForce’s DRAM/NAND analysis is a useful warning against treating all “memory” as one market.

Why AI is squeezing conventional DRAM
AI accelerators move data at very high rates, which makes HBM essential. HBM consumes DRAM dies but also requires additional stacking, bonding, testing and advanced packaging. Samsung, SK hynix and Micron make both HBM and conventional DRAM, so expanding HBM can reduce the resources available for ordinary products.
TrendForce estimates HBM wafer input at roughly 18% of the top three suppliers’ total DRAM wafer input at the end of 2025, 22% in 2026 and 30% by the end of 2027. That is a wafer-input share, not 30% of finished DRAM bits or global memory revenue. The same analysis projects HBM at about 13% of total DRAM bit supply in 2027. See the TrendForce HBM allocation analysis.
AI servers also consume large quantities of conventional server DRAM and enterprise storage. Cloud providers are using long-term agreements and allocation commitments, which can leave less supply for buyers relying on the spot market. TrendForce discusses that procurement pressure in its cloud-demand outlook.

What the latest forecasts say
- Second quarter 2026: TrendForce forecast conventional DRAM contract prices to rise 58–63% quarter over quarter in its March 31 assessment (source).
- Third quarter 2026: TrendForce said prices should continue rising but at a slower rate because prices were already high and consumer affordability was weakening (source). A slower increase still means prices are increasing, not falling.
- 2027: TrendForce’s July outlook says AI demand is expected to outpace supply growth, with HBM and SOCAMM taking more capacity and squeezing conventional server DRAM (source).
These are forecasts, not a fixed deadline. Tightness could ease gradually, one product could improve while another remains constrained, or prices could peak in 2027 and decline later as capacity arrives. A separate TrendForce structural outlook describes that uncertainty.
Why new fabs will not provide instant relief
Semiconductor capacity takes years to become usable output. A project requires clean-room construction, equipment delivery and installation, process qualification, yield improvement and, for HBM, specialized packaging and testing. Advanced-node migration can increase bits per wafer, but it does not immediately create the exact product a customer needs.
TrendForce’s March forecast said meaningful expansion was unlikely before late 2027 or 2028. Micron’s own materials put next-generation DRAM volume production in the second half of calendar 2027, illustrating the lag between an announced technology and substantial supply. The company’s forward-looking timeline is in its investor materials.

New output may also be directed first to higher-value HBM and server products. More total wafers therefore do not guarantee immediate relief for DDR4, desktop DDR5 or LPDDR.

Consumers and PC builders
- Standalone DDR4 and DDR5 modules may cost more and receive fewer discounts.
- Prebuilt desktops and laptops may become more expensive or ship with less memory.
- High-capacity configurations are more exposed when allocation is tight.
Retail prices vary with inventory, module-maker margins, promotions, currency and regional demand. Do not assume a contract increase applies at the same rate to a retail kit.

Higher memory costs raise bill-of-materials pressure. Vendors may adjust configurations, delay high-capacity models or raise prices. LPDDR costs can affect phones and thin laptops. A July 2026 report citing TrendForce and IDC said pressure could extend into those markets into mid-2027, while warning that high prices may weaken demand (Aju Press).

Cloud providers and data centers
AI operators face higher HBM and server-memory costs, stronger incentives to sign supply agreements, and pressure to improve memory utilization, scheduling and workload efficiency. Those costs can feed into infrastructure budgets and, indirectly, cloud pricing.
Memory suppliers
Samsung, SK hynix and Micron dominate global DRAM production, according to market-data cited by Tom’s Hardware. Their allocation choices and HBM capacity plans therefore have an outsized effect on conventional DRAM availability.
What could make the forecast wrong?
- AI infrastructure spending or accelerator shipments slow.
- New fabs ramp faster, yields improve, or process migrations add bits sooner.
- Cloud customers unwind defensive inventories or long-term commitments.
- Consumer demand falls enough to offset server demand.
- Alternative architectures reduce HBM intensity.
- Macroeconomic conditions, export controls or new capacity alter regional supply.
What buyers should do
If you are upgrading a personal computer
- Buy now when the system is already running out of memory, the upgrade supports paid work, or the required capacity is unusually difficult to source.
- Wait when the upgrade is optional and you can tolerate price volatility.
- Check compatibility before ordering: DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable, and desktop DIMMs, laptop SO-DIMMs, ECC UDIMMs and server RDIMMs serve different platforms.
- Compare the total system price. A sensibly configured prebuilt can sometimes cost less than buying a high-capacity upgrade separately, but verify the exact memory and warranty.
If you manage procurement
- Plan separate scenarios for HBM, server DDR5, PC DRAM, LPDDR and NAND rather than using one “memory” indicator.
- Secure allocations early, while reviewing minimum-volume obligations and price floors.
- Validate any substitution for compatibility, performance, reliability and continuity.
- Model both continued AI expansion and an AI-capex slowdown.
Bottom line
Authoritative 2026 forecasts support a market that remains structurally tight through at least part of 2027, because AI is drawing more HBM and server-memory capacity while new supply takes years to qualify. The “another 30%” phrase is not a universal retail forecast: it describes a dated, attributed market movement, and subsequent increases differ by product, contract and quarter.
