Is Lloyds Bank Selling Customer Data? What Its 35% Technology-Cost Reduction Means

A March 2026 report said Lloyds may commercialise more anonymised data. Its official 35% figure is a reduction in Group run and change technology costs, not total costs.

Computer Weekly reported in March 2026 that Lloyds was considering commercialising more anonymised customer data. That is not confirmation that Lloyds has sold customer data, nor evidence that it plans to sell identifiable customer records. Separately, Lloyds’ official H1 2026 update says Group run and change technology costs were down approximately 35%—not that the bank is cutting all its costs by 35%.

What did Lloyds reportedly plan to do with customer data?

On 6 March 2026, Computer Weekly reported that Lloyds’ proposed “Technology Strategy 3.0” included selling more anonymised customer data to third parties. The article attributed its account of the proposal to the Financial Times. The underlying FT report is not independently available in the cited material, so the reported data-sale plan should be treated as attributed reporting, not a confirmed Lloyds announcement or completed transaction.

Computer Weekly also quoted a Lloyds spokesperson saying the bank was “transforming our business and accelerating our in-house data and technology capabilities” to deliver better digital experiences, and that it would set out future ambitions at its July strategy day. That statement did not confirm a data sale.

Is Lloyds selling your personal data?

The available sources do not establish that Lloyds announced a sale of identifiable customer records. The March report described anonymised data, while Lloyds’ official strategy materials published in July discuss data-led propositions and connected services without naming data-sale buyers, contracts or revenue. It would therefore be inaccurate to say that Lloyds has confirmed it will sell your personal information.

Anonymised information is intended not to identify an individual. That differs from identifiable account or transaction records. The sources do not specify the proposed data’s precise form, the anonymisation safeguards, or whether any third party would receive data or derived insights. Those details remain unconfirmed.

What does Lloyds’ existing use of anonymised data show?

Lloyds’ 2025 Consumer Digital Index says the Group used anonymised transactional data from one million customers across its brands to generate digital and financial engagement scores and capability segments. The report also drew on an online survey of approximately 5,000 UK adults, conducted from 3 July to 28 July 2025.

SaiTech IT 5 Pack RFID Blocking Card for Credit Debit ID Card, Black
  • SECURE YOUR WALLET FROM e-PICKPOCKETING: Prevent potential identity and financial theft through your contactless cards. This is the simplest and most effective prevention solution! Block RFID and NFC signals, protect your personal information, and enjoy peace of mind wherever your travels or business take you.
  • JAMMING CHIP: An antenna and jamming chip makes up the main components of the card. The antenna will sense incoming radio waves and draw power for the chip to create a jamming signal. Lifetime usage as the card does not require battery.
  • BROAD WORKING DISTANCE: With a 2.4” working distance, your entire wallet stays protected. The premium RFID blocking card helps secure cards within 1.2” on either side, providing reliable protection against electronic pickpocketing.
  • ULTRA-THIN & COMPACT: At the size of a standard credit card and at only 0.03” thick, the card will fit into any wallet, purse or card case. Keep your wallet compact with no added bulk from this card. Best for travel, business, and everyday use.
  • TEST THE CARD: Test the card is working at your local supermarket. At the self-service checkout machines, combine the card and a contactless card on the payment reader. Payment with the contactless card will be blocked and an error message should occur on the reader.

This documents anonymised data use for research and segmentation. It does not show that Lloyds sold that data to third parties or establish that the research activity is the same as the commercialisation described in the March report.

What does the 35% cost reduction apply to?

Lloyds’ official strategy page reports an approximately 35% reduction in Group run and change technology costs in H1 2026. The figure applies to technology costs, not total Group costs or customers’ banking charges. The page does not make the 35% figure a claim about an across-the-board reduction in the bank’s spending.

What did Lloyds officially announce for 2027–2030?

On 30 July 2026, Lloyds published its Accelerate 2030 strategy. The official priorities include data-led connected propositions, extending customer reach through third-party and AI channels, modernising core platforms, reinventing servicing and operations, and using data as an enabler for AI. These are official strategic priorities; they do not, by themselves, confirm the specific third-party data sale described in the March reporting.

How should customers interpret the headlines?

  • “Sell more customer data”: the March report’s wording was qualified as anonymised data and attributed to Financial Times reporting.
  • “Cut costs by 35%”: Lloyds’ official figure concerns Group run and change technology costs in H1 2026, not all costs.
  • Data use already documented: Lloyds’ 2025 index describes anonymised transaction data used for research and segmentation, not a third-party sale.
  • What is not established: a completed sale, identifiable customer-record transfers, named buyers, contracts, revenues or the specific safeguards for any proposed commercial use.
