Yes—bringing a relevant letter of recommendation is appropriate, but keep it with your interview materials rather than handing it over unsolicited. Follow the employer’s instructions first. If the letter was not requested, offer it only if it adds useful evidence or the interviewer asks for references or supporting documents.
Recommendation letter or reference list: which should you bring?
These documents serve different purposes. A reference list gives an employer contact information for people who can discuss your work. A recommendation letter is a written endorsement that describes your strengths or experience.

When to bring or submit the letter
If the employer requested a letter
Follow the job posting or interviewer’s directions about format, recipient, and timing. Some application processes—including certain internships, fellowships, education roles, and graduate or professional school admissions—explicitly require recommendation letters. Submit the letter through the stated process; an in-person interview does not change those instructions.

If the employer did not request one
It is fine to have a relevant letter available. Keep one clean copy in a folder with your résumé and reference sheet, and let the interviewer decide whether to review it. If the conversation turns to references, you can say, “I have a relevant recommendation letter with me if you’d like a copy.”
Do not assume the interviewer wants an unsolicited letter. USC Career Center advises against including reference lists or recommendation letters with application materials unless requested: References. That guidance is about application materials; at an interview, a low-pressure offer is different from handing over documents without being asked.

Is a recommendation letter worth bringing?
Bring it when it is current, credible, and specific to qualities or work that matter for the position. A general endorsement may add little if it does not address the role. If the letter is addressed to a particular program or person, marked confidential, outdated, or unrelated to the job, do not present it without checking that sharing it is appropriate.
University of Toronto Mississauga Career Centre notes that most employers will not ask for reference letters, while suggesting that a relevant letter can accompany a reference sheet: Cover Letters and References. UC Davis Career Center says references generally come into play after a successful interview and before an offer, though an employer may ask for reference information earlier. These are practical guidelines, not a universal rule for every employer or hiring process.

Prepare your references separately
Bring an up-to-date reference sheet even if you have a recommendation letter. Ask each person’s permission before listing them, confirm their preferred contact details, and make sure they are still willing to serve as a reference. Employers may request contact information during or after an interview, and some ask earlier in the process.
