Available evidence instead describes money connected to the Greta Thunberg Foundation, which says it receives awards, royalties and donations for charitable work and does not pay Thunberg. Those organizational funds are not the same as her personal wealth.
Is Greta Thunberg a millionaire?
That claim is not substantiated by the available evidence. No reliable current disclosure of Thunberg’s personal assets and liabilities establishes her net worth. Celebrity net-worth estimates and viral earnings claims should not be treated as verified financial records.
One figure that can cause confusion is the Greta Thunberg Foundation’s report that it had received EUR 1,235,000 in awards and prize money and donated EUR 1,235,000 as of October 2025, taking exchange rates and bank transfer fees into account. Those are totals reported by the Foundation for the organization—not an estimate of Thunberg’s personal wealth. The Foundation’s grants and donations are listed on its website.
What is known about her income and book royalties?
The Foundation’s account
The Greta Thunberg Foundation says it was founded in 2019 to distribute money connected to awards, royalties and donations to causes aligned with its mission. It says Thunberg’s parents originally founded it while she was a minor.

Regarding The Climate Book, the Foundation says, “The copyright and earnings belong to the Foundation.” It says funds support its mission or essential operating costs, and that Thunberg is not paid by the Foundation. These are the Foundation’s statements about its own role and finances, not an independent audit of Thunberg’s complete financial circumstances. The Foundation’s FAQ explains its account of the organization’s funding and governance.
What Thunberg said in 2022
In an October 15, 2022 report, The Independent quoted Thunberg discussing donations of award money and reported that she said her university student grant was her only income at that time. She said, “I have won many awards that are worth even more, but I’ve donated all my money.” This is a dated statement about her circumstances in 2022, not a current income disclosure. Read The Independent’s report.

Did Greta Thunberg earn $46 million?
No reliable evidence supports that viral claim. AFP reported on September 30, 2019, that the story about Thunberg earning $46 million as a “highest-paid activist” came from a satirical Mediamass post, recirculated with a fake magazine cover. AFP said a spokesperson for Thunberg denied the allegation. The spokesperson’s statement, as reported by AFP, said she did not receive payment for activism or fees for appearances or media engagements, and that income her family received from two books was donated to charity. That was a statement reported in 2019, not a current financial disclosure. Read AFP’s fact-check.
How did Thunberg become a public figure?
Thunberg began her school strike outside the Swedish Parliament in August 2018, when she was 15. Her speeches were later collected in No One Is Too Small to Make a Difference, a 160-page book published by Penguin Books on November 12, 2019. The publication of books and receipt of awards do not, by themselves, establish how much an individual personally earned or retained. Penguin Random House’s book page provides publication details.
What the available figures do—and do not—show
| Information | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| EUR 1,235,000 in award and prize money received and EUR 1,235,000 donated, as reported by the Greta Thunberg Foundation as of October 2025 | Foundation-reported organizational receipts and donations, taking exchange rates and bank transfer fees into account; not Thunberg’s personal net worth. |
| Thunberg’s statement about donating award money and having a student grant as her only income, reported by The Independent in October 2022 | A time-specific account of her income at that time; it does not establish her finances in 2026. |
| The viral $46 million claim, addressed by AFP in September 2019 | A claim traced to a parody post and denied by a spokesperson, not a verified earnings figure. |
| A current, independently verified personal net-worth figure | Not established in the sources cited here. |
The practical distinction is between money held or received by an organization and wealth owned personally by an individual. Foundation award receipts and donations cannot be used as a proxy for Thunberg’s assets, and a statement about income in 2022 cannot answer what her finances are now.
