The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) estimated that groceries for its Fourth of July cookout basket for 10 cost $69.68 in 2022—nearly $10, or 17%, more than in 2021. That is a historical survey estimate, not a current grocery bill or a guarantee of what any household would pay.
What the $69.68 July 4 grocery estimate includes
AFBF’s 2022 marketbasket represented a homemade cookout for 10. Volunteer shoppers collected prices for a selected menu of cheeseburgers, chicken breasts, pork chops, potato chips, pork and beans, fresh strawberries, homemade potato salad, fresh-squeezed lemonade, chocolate chip cookies, and ice cream. Contemporaneous reporting on the survey described the $69.68 total and the year-over-year increase.
The basket is a snapshot of those foods, not an exhaustive July Fourth menu. It also is not a measure of every family’s actual bill: local prices, brands, quantities, store promotions, and menu choices can change the total. The available description does not establish a sample size, weighting method, or a more precise claim about national representativeness than that volunteer shoppers collected prices across the country.
How the estimate changed in later surveys
Later annual estimates show why the 2022 headline should stay anchored to its year rather than be treated as today’s price. AFBF reported these totals for its cookout basket serving 10:

| Survey year | Basket total | AFBF’s reported comparison |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | $69.68 | Nearly $10, or 17%, above 2021, as reported at the time. FERN |
| 2023 | $67.73 | Down $1.95, or 3%, from 2022, but 14% above 2021. AFBF |
| 2025 | $70.92 | 30 cents below 2024 and, according to AFBF, the second most expensive total in the survey’s history since 2013. AFBF |
| 2026 | $73.82 | About 4% above 2025, according to AFBF economist Faith Parum; the interview compared that increase with a cited 4.2% overall annual inflation rate. AFBF |
These are annual estimates for the survey basket, not a like-for-like record of every grocery purchase or a substitute for a household’s local prices. AFBF’s 2025 release also discusses the broader food-at-home Consumer Price Index, which measures a different scope. Associate Economist Samantha Ayoub said in that release, “Inflation and lower availability of some food items continue to keep prices stubbornly high for America’s families.”
Did every cookout item get more expensive?
No. The overall basket total can rise even when some included foods fall in price. In its 2026 account, AFBF identified beef and strawberries among the items that increased, and said a damaging Florida freeze was the main reason for the strawberry increase. It reported declines for potato salad and chips, pointing to lower potato and egg prices as explanations for its basket. These are AFBF’s explanations for the price movements it observed, not a complete account of food inflation.

How to use the survey when planning a cookout
Use the 2022 figure to understand what that specific survey found—not as a budget for a cookout today. To estimate your own cost, check prices for the quantities and brands you plan to buy at nearby stores. AFBF says retailers generally increase holiday promotions and specials as the date approaches, so comparing local offers may help; savings and availability vary by store and shopper.
