No—GameStop did not report a company-wide shutdown in 2023. Its fiscal 2023 disclosures describe a retailer continuing to operate stores and ecommerce, alongside store closures, exits from three countries, and the wind-down of two digital services. Those changes were real, but they were not the same as closing the entire company.
Is GameStop closing all its stores?
No. GameStop’s fiscal 2023 Form 10-K describes the company as offering games and entertainment products through its stores and ecommerce platforms. The filing reports 4,169 stores at February 3, 2024; it does not describe a company-wide retail shutdown. The filing covers the fiscal year that ended on that date, so it cannot confirm the status of an individual location today.

What did GameStop close or wind down?
Several narrower changes can explain why people heard that GameStop was “closing.” They differed in scope: some involved individual stores, some involved operations in particular countries, and another involved digital products.

These figures and events are reported in GameStop’s fiscal 2023 Form 10-K. Store “disposals” in the filing are part of the reported change in the store count; they should not be read as evidence that every remaining location was closing.

Why did the shutdown rumor arise?
GameStop was reducing its footprint and containing costs, and its digital wallet and NFT marketplace were being wound down. A headline or post about one of those actions can sound like a broader closure if it leaves out the scope. The annual report presents them as individual business decisions while also describing ongoing store and ecommerce operations.
GameStop’s fiscal 2022 results release, published March 21, 2023, also refers to store-closure costs among items excluded from certain adjusted financial measures. That is evidence of store closures in the company’s reporting context—not a statement that GameStop was shutting down as a company. See the fiscal 2022 results release.

How were GameStop’s finances in fiscal 2023?
The year was difficult on sales compared with fiscal 2022, but GameStop reported positive net income for fiscal 2023. Its March 26, 2024 results release reported:

How to check a particular GameStop location
The fiscal 2023 store count cannot tell you whether a specific branch is open now. For a current location, check GameStop’s store information or contact that store directly; these historical filings do not establish an individual store’s present status.
