Yes—trade reports in February 2024 said Sony Music Group agreed to buy a 50% stake in Michael Jackson’s publishing and recorded-masters catalog. Variety attributed a valuation of more than $1.2 billion to sources and reported that the stake would cost at least $600 million. Those figures were reported estimates, not deal terms confirmed in the Sony releases reviewed.
What Sony reportedly bought in 2024
Variety reported that Sony Music Group agreed to acquire half of Jackson’s publishing and recorded-masters catalog. The reported scope included publishing rights, including Mijac Music, as well as recorded masters. A deal tracker later described the transaction as excluding royalties from the MJ Broadway musical; that detail comes from secondary aggregation, not a reviewed primary transaction document.

The distinction matters: “buying the catalog” can suggest Sony acquired all rights outright. The reported transaction was a 50% stake, and the public Sony releases reviewed do not establish the final contract terms or exact closing date. Variety’s February 2024 report is the source for the reported deal and financial estimates.
How much was the deal worth?
Variety attributed the figures below to sources; they should be read as reported estimates, not officially disclosed transaction terms:
#1 Best Overall
| Figure | What it refers to | Status |
|---|---|---|
| More than $1.2 billion | Reported valuation of the relevant Jackson catalog rights | Estimate attributed by Variety to sources |
| At least $600 million | Reported price for Sony’s 50% stake | Estimate attributed by Variety to sources |
The valuation and stake price are different measures: the first describes the reported value of the rights involved, while the second is the reported consideration for half of them. The reviewed official Sony announcements do not confirm either figure or disclose final 2024 terms.
Why the 2016 Sony deal is not the same transaction
Sony’s 2016 purchase concerned the Estate’s remaining 50% of Sony/ATV Music Publishing—not the reported 2024 stake in Jackson’s publishing and recorded masters. Sony said the earlier transaction left Jackson’s master recordings, Mijac Music and the Estate’s interest in EMI Music Publishing unaffected.

| 2016 Sony/ATV acquisition | Sony acquired the Estate’s remaining 50% of Sony/ATV Music Publishing; Sony said Jackson’s masters, Mijac Music and the Estate’s EMI interest were unaffected. | Sony reported total payments of $750 million, including approximately $733 million in lump-sum payment plus distributions. |
| Reported 2024 catalog transaction | Sony Music Group reportedly agreed to buy a 50% stake spanning publishing and recorded masters. | Variety reported a catalog-rights valuation above $1.2 billion and a stake price of at least $600 million, both attributed to sources rather than confirmed official terms. |
Sony’s 2016 announcement and closing release document that separate Sony/ATV transaction. Its $750 million total must not be mistaken for the price of the reported 2024 deal.

Sony and Jackson’s Estate announced a separate long-term recording agreement in 2017, effective January 1, 2018, extending Sony’s administration of Jackson’s record catalog. That history helps explain Sony’s existing relationship with the recordings, but it does not confirm the terms of the reported 2024 stake sale. In the 2017 announcement, Rob Stringer, then CEO of Sony Music Entertainment, said Jackson’s music and videos as a Sony Music artist were “essential to pop culture history.” It was a comment about the artist’s legacy, not the later transaction. Sony Music’s 2017 announcement describes that agreement.

What is and is not established publicly
- Trade reporting in February 2024 described a 50% stake sale covering publishing and recorded masters, with the reported valuation and price attributed to sources.
- A deal tracker says the reported scope included half of publishing, including Mijac Music, and recorded masters, and excluded MJ Broadway musical royalties; that account is secondary, not a primary contract record. The tracker’s account should be read with that qualification.
- The reviewed Sony releases establish details of the 2016 Sony/ATV transaction and the 2017 recording agreement, not final 2024 consideration or operative rights.
- No primary 2024 transaction document in the sources cited here establishes the exact closing date or definitive rights transferred.
