Is FileYourTaxes.com Legit? What IRS Free File Status Means

FileYourTaxes.com is listed by the IRS as a partner in the 2026 IRS Free File program, which is evidence that it participates in the program. It is not an IRS endorsement or a guarantee of accurate filing, good service, security, or a free return for every user. Check the current offer, eligibility rules, and any state or add-on charges before filing.

What the IRS listing does—and does not—show

The IRS’s January 9, 2026 announcement names FileYourTaxes.com as one of eight private-sector providers offering guided software through IRS Free File for the 2026 filing season. The IRS gave a general eligibility ceiling of 2025 adjusted gross income (AGI) of $89,000 or less, but each provider sets its own rules, so that figure alone does not establish that you qualify for this company’s offer. Read the IRS announcement and check current program details.

Participation is not the same as government approval of a product’s quality. The IRS says it does not endorse or warrant participating companies or their products or services. Its authorized e-file provider guidance also advises taxpayers to do their own due diligence. A listing supports the claim that the provider participates in the relevant program; it does not guarantee a particular customer’s experience or outcome. See the IRS guidance on approved e-file provider listings.

Check eligibility and the total price before filing

IRS Free File offers are seasonal, and a provider’s rules may be narrower than the program’s general income ceiling. Before entering tax or payment information, confirm that the offer is for the filing year you need and that you meet its specific requirements. Review the price for federal filing, state filing, and any optional services: IRS guidance says state returns may be included by some partners and may cost extra with others. Use the IRS Free File tools to review current offers.

  • Confirm the provider’s eligibility rules for your income, state, age, and any other conditions that apply.
  • Check whether your state return is included or has a separate charge.
  • Review any add-ons and the final amount due before you submit payment.
  • Make sure the software supports the tax forms and circumstances relevant to your return; do not assume every tax situation is covered by a free offer.

To reduce the risk of landing on an imitation or outdated offer, reach the partner through the IRS’s current Free File tools rather than relying only on a search advertisement or an unfamiliar link. The IRS also offers Free File Fillable Forms for people comfortable preparing their own return; check IRS.gov for that option’s eligibility and limitations. These are IRS tools, not services provided by FileYourTaxes.com.

What is known about the company and customer feedback

FileYourTaxes.com says it grew out of a Southern California family tax practice and technology business and has been involved in online filing since the 1990s. That is the company’s own account of its history, not independent evidence of present-day service quality or data security. Read the company’s account of its history.

Better Business Bureau (BBB) pages accessed in 2026 showed seven complaints filed over three years, including three categorized as billing issues. The BBB reviews page displayed an average of 1.08 from 13 customer reviews. These are limited, self-selected records—not a rate of complaints among all customers or proof that every user has the same experience. BBB cautions that complaint information may not represent all complaints. View the BBB complaint record and the BBB customer reviews.

How to decide whether to use it

The available evidence supports a narrow conclusion: FileYourTaxes.com participates in IRS Free File for the 2026 filing season, but that status alone cannot settle whether it is the right service for your return. Compare the current offer against your needs before choosing.

  • Eligibility: Check the provider-specific rules rather than relying only on the general AGI ceiling.
  • Coverage and cost: Confirm that your federal and state returns and relevant forms are supported, and calculate the full price including optional services.
  • Help if something goes wrong: Review what support is available for rejected returns, billing questions, and other filing problems. The IRS listing does not establish the provider’s support quality.
  • Privacy: Read the service’s privacy and data-handling terms before sharing sensitive tax information.

If another option may fit better, compare current partners using IRS Free File tools. For help with a particular charge or return, use the provider’s official support channels and retain relevant receipts or notices. The available complaint and review figures cannot predict how an individual case will be resolved.
