HeriBase (Formerly HeritCoin) Review: Coin Identifier App Pros and Cons

HeriBase, formerly HeritCoin, offers photo identification and collection tools, but its estimates are starting points—not proof of authenticity, grade, or sale price.

HeriBase, the app formerly called HeritCoin, can help identify coins and banknotes from photos, organize a collection, and surface reference values and marketplace listings. Its results are best treated as research leads—not proof of a coin’s authenticity, grade, or likely selling price. The app’s maker advertises 99.9% identification accuracy, but no independent test methodology is established in the sources cited here.

What is HeriBase, and what does it do?

HeriBase is the current name for the app previously branded HeritCoin. The company’s FAQ confirms the change and notes that older materials may still use the HeritCoin name. The app is designed to identify coins and banknotes from photos, catalog collection items, show estimated value information and trends, and provide access to marketplace listings and additional review for selected items. HeriBase’s official site and its Google Play listing describe those features.

HeriBase also advertises 99.9% identification accuracy, more than one million collectors, and coverage across 195+ countries or regions. These are company-published claims; the available product materials do not provide an independent accuracy study or methodology. The Google Play listing showed 4.7 stars, approximately 72.6K reviews, and 5M+ downloads when observed on October 8, 2026. Those store figures can change and are not controlled evidence of identification quality.

HeriBase pros and cons

Potential advantage Limitation to keep in mind
Photo-based identification can offer a quick starting point for researching a coin or banknote. A photo result can be wrong or incomplete; it does not establish authenticity, grade, or variety by itself.
Cataloging and collection tools can help organize items, while estimated values and trends offer reference points. Estimates can change and are not guaranteed sale prices. An asking price, completed sale, reference estimate, and expert opinion are different evidence.
Marketplace listings and paid specialist review for selected items extend the app beyond identification. Marketplace availability and selected-item review do not guarantee a buyer, appraisal outcome, or sale price. The company’s descriptions of its specialists are not independent validation of appraisal quality.
The company describes specialists covering areas such as commemorative euro coins, world varieties, precious-metal coins, Brazilian currency, and U.S. and Spanish errors and varieties. Play Store reviews include individual reports of identification failures, camera focus difficulty, changing estimates, and confusion about trial or subscription terms. These reports are not a representative sample or controlled test.

The Google Play listing captures the central caveat: “Use them as a starting point for research—not a guarantee of authenticity or sale price.”

Is HeriBase free, and what does a subscription cost?

The official FAQ describes three free identifications per day in documented usage and says additional scans may be available after watching ads. It also cautions that allowances and advertising may vary. The user guide says subscription access includes unlimited identification, but benefits differ by plan.

The company’s 2026 FAQ and guide illustrate a US$39.99 annual offer and a three-day trial; these are examples, not a universal or verified current offer for every user. Before starting a trial or subscribing, check the in-app screen and store confirmation for the actual price, billing period, eligibility, trial end date, and renewal terms. A trial may convert to a paid subscription under the terms accepted. Cancel through the billing provider and account used to subscribe—Apple Subscriptions or Google Play Subscriptions, as applicable. Uninstalling the app does not cancel a subscription. See the official FAQ and user guide, updated September 22, 2026 for the company’s guidance.

How to check whether a coin is valuable

Use an app result to narrow the identification, then verify the details that can change a coin’s value. HeriBase’s FAQ recommends confirming the country or region, denomination, date, mint mark, variety, and condition before relying on an estimate. Coins with the same date can differ because other identifying features or their condition differ.

  1. Confirm the coin’s identity. Check the country or region, denomination, date, mint mark, and any suspected variety. Use clear, well-focused photos of both sides and close-ups of important details.
  2. Separate identification from grading. A type match is not a grade. Compare condition carefully, and do not assume that a photo app has assessed every surface detail or established a formal grade.
  3. Compare completed sales. Look for recent sales of the same issue and similar condition. Note the sale date, currency, fees, and shipping. An active asking price is not proof that a coin sold for that amount.
  4. Interpret the number correctly. A reference estimate, an asking price, a completed sale, an expert opinion, and a buyer’s offer are not interchangeable. A collection’s combined reference value may also differ from a buyer’s offer for the collection as a whole.
  5. Investigate material questions. Compare the coin’s design and recorded composition with its measured weight and dimensions. The company says remote review cannot verify composition on its own; significant uncertainty may call for an in-person examination or suitable metal testing.

HeriBase offers photo-based expert appraisal as a separate paid service. The company’s FAQ says this does not automatically provide an in-hand grading certificate or guarantee a sale price. For a consequential question about authenticity, condition, or variety, an in-person examination may be more appropriate; the FAQ gives PCGS as an example of a service that can examine and grade a coin in hand.

How to compare HeriBase with another coin app

A useful comparison uses the same known coins and similarly clear photos in each app. That makes differences in identification and value presentation easier to spot without treating a small trial as a universal accuracy ranking.

  • Does the app correctly identify the country, denomination, year, mint mark, and variety?
  • Does it distinguish an identification from a condition assessment or grade?
  • What evidence supports its value figure, and is the number a reference estimate, asking price, appraisal, or completed sale?
  • What are the free-use limits, trial eligibility, billing interval, renewal terms, cancellation route, and any separate appraisal fees?
  • Does it provide the cataloging, history, and collection export features you actually need?

Who might find HeriBase useful?

HeriBase may suit a collector who wants a convenient first pass at identifying items and a digital way to organize a collection. Its estimates and marketplace tools can help direct further research, provided they are not mistaken for a guaranteed valuation. It is a weaker fit for someone who needs a definitive authentication or grade, a guaranteed sale price, or independently validated identification accuracy from an app alone.
