The U.S. Government Accountability Office says the White House reported that Musk left his senior-advisor position in May 2025; its 2026 report does not establish a later return. The more concrete issue for SpaceX investors is the company’s federal business: government agencies accounted for a meaningful share of its 2025 revenue, and SpaceX says federal customers have broad contractual powers that could affect its business.
Has Musk returned to government work?
Not on the evidence established in the available official record. In its 2026 report, DOGE: Information on Personnel and Ethics Activities, the Government Accountability Office describes Musk as a former senior adviser to the president and says he separated from that position in May 2025, according to the White House. The report also says it could not describe some positions, including Musk’s, in full. It therefore documents the reported departure but does not resolve whether he later had informal contact, advisory activity, or another role.
That distinction matters: government contracts held by SpaceX are not evidence that Musk personally returned to government service, and a political relationship is not the same thing as a formal government position. The stock-risk question can be examined without treating the title’s premise as established.
Why federal business matters to SpaceX shareholders
SpaceX’s 2026 offering disclosure says approximately one-fifth of its 2025 revenue was attributable to agencies within the U.S. federal government. It names NASA, the Department of War, the General Services Administration, and intelligence agencies among its federal customers. The disclosed work includes launch services, spacecraft development, satellite deployment, and AI products.

That is material exposure, but it is not the same as total dependence on federal spending. The Associated Press reported from the company’s offering filing that SpaceX recorded $18.7 billion in revenue and $2.6 billion in operating losses in 2025. Those company figures describe the business as a whole; they do not show that federal revenue caused the operating loss.
SpaceX’s August 4, 2026 second-quarter results release reported $7.8 billion in revenue and a $541 million net loss for the quarter ended June 30, 2026. The same release said the company had more than $6 billion in multiyear U.S. government contracts for Starshield. These are issuer-reported figures for different measures and periods: quarterly revenue and net loss should not be compared directly with annual revenue and operating losses, and a multiyear contract total is not the same as revenue already earned.

What the government’s contractual powers mean in practice
SpaceX’s offering disclosure states that the government can unilaterally take several actions affecting contracts and access to future work. The company also warns that audits can examine contract-related costs and fees, including allocated indirect costs. For investors, the key point is not that an agency will necessarily use these powers, but that the company identifies them as part of its federal contracting risk.
Contract performance is also distinct from regulatory approval. A contract award does not itself guarantee that every launch, service, or product will receive all required approvals, while regulatory oversight is not the same as a decision to end a contract. Both can affect operations, but they are different channels of risk.

What this does—and does not—say about SpaceX stock
The evidence supports a risk framework, not a prediction. Federal work could provide substantial business, while contract changes, eligibility decisions, security-clearance action, compliance problems, or shifts in political conditions could create uncertainty. The cited material does not quantify how any such event would affect valuation or share price, and it does not show that a particular political development has already changed SpaceX’s awards.
For a prospective shareholder, the useful questions are whether the federal share of revenue is rising or falling, how much of the business depends on individual contracts or programs, whether operating results improve across the company, and how the offering’s voting structure affects shareholder influence. Those questions keep contract exposure, political scrutiny, operating performance, and governance in their proper lanes.
