Not yet. COMAC’s C939 is best described as a reported early-stage concept, not a confirmed aircraft with published specifications or a near-term launch plan. COMAC’s public product information currently lists its C929 as a widebody; it does not list a C939. A 2024 report said preliminary C939 designs had been sketched, but that a testable prototype was still many years away.
What is the COMAC C939?
The C939 is a proposed widebody aircraft associated with China’s Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC). Its status is not comparable to that of a formally published product: COMAC’s current public lineup names the C909, C919 and C929, and describes the C929 as its widebody. The C939 does not appear in that listing. That absence does not rule out private design work; it means the public record does not yet establish the C939 as a product with confirmed specifications.
On 13 May 2024, the South China Morning Post reported that preliminary C939 designs had been sketched. The report attributed the information to an unnamed source familiar with the matter and said it would be many years before the concepts became a testable prototype. That is attributed reporting, not a COMAC announcement.
How many passengers could the C939 carry?
No current COMAC-confirmed C939 capacity is published. A 2024 analysis by Arthur D. Little described an earlier proposed C939 concept as a 400-seat, long-range widebody, positioned against aircraft including the Boeing 777 and 747 and Airbus A350 and A380. Treat 400 seats as historical concept positioning, not a confirmed cabin layout, final specification or current competitor comparison.

For context, COMAC’s published baseline description gives the C929 a capacity of 282–440 seats. Its C919 baseline is a narrower-body aircraft with 158–192 seats and a stated range of 4,075–5,555 km. Those are figures for the C929 and C919, not evidence of the C939’s capacity or range. COMAC lists the C919’s Chinese Civil Aviation Administration type certification date as 29 September 2022, first delivery as 9 December 2022, and first commercial flight as 28 May 2023.
When will the C939 fly or enter service?
The reviewed sources establish no credible C939 date for a prototype, first flight, certification or entry into service. Arthur D. Little said in 2024 that no schedule had been published; the SCMP report described a testable prototype as many years away. Neither source provides a timetable that can be treated as current or firm.

Can the C939 take on Boeing and Airbus?
It is too early to assess the C939’s competitiveness. A market ambition or an early design concept does not show that an aircraft can compete commercially with established widebodies. That judgment would require published data on:
- Seating and cabin configurations, range and payload;
- Fuel consumption, operating costs, and engine and maintenance arrangements;
- Certification coverage in the markets airlines want to serve;
- Production capacity and delivery reliability;
- Confirmed airline orders, reliability, and global maintenance and customer support.
The available sources do not establish current C939 values for those measures, a confirmed order count, a program budget, or an official engine choice. Comparing it directly with in-service Boeing or Airbus aircraft would therefore imply a level of evidence that is not available.

What the C939’s status means
The C939 may represent a possible future step in COMAC’s widebody ambitions, but the public evidence supports only a cautious conclusion: early design work has been reported, while a formal C939 product specification and schedule have not been published in the sources reviewed. COMAC’s documented widebody offering in its public lineup is the C929, not the C939.
